Physics Depth Study 11PHY_3 Emma Manley FORCES PART A: DEPTH STUDY: REPORT REQUIREMENTS Aim To investigate the relationship between an objects mass and the transfer of momentum during a nearly elastic head on collision involving two moving entities. Materials · (x3) 200g Masses · (x2) Pasco Wireless Smart Carts (268.6g each) · (x2) Collision Trolley · (x2) Plastic Tubes (Bumpers) · (x1) 1m Ruler · (x1) 30cm Ruler · (x1) Stopwatch · (x1) Wooden Plank (Base) Method 1. Measure the width of the carts and mark out where to place the bumpers (leave a slight gap between both sides of the carts and the bumpers). 2. Measure a gap of 5cm 3. Stick the plastic tubes (bumpers) to the wooden plank (base). 4. Set up the 1m ruler alongside the base and place the 30cm ruler directly after that. 5. Place 1 collision trolley pressed up against either end of the wooden plank. 6. Place the carts at the beginning of the bumpers on each side. a. Ensure that the magnets on the back of the carts were placed facing the collision trolleys and the carts were set so that where the magnet and body of the cart met was placed at the start of the bumpers. 7. Set up a stopwatch next to your assembled materials. 8. Simultaneously, press the button, activating the collision trolleys and record the experiment. 9. Reset the collision trolleys and repeat steps 6-8 and add a total of 600g masses to one cart, in 200g intervals. Variables Independent Variable: · The factor that is being changed · The mass of the carts Dependant Variable: · The factor that is being measured · The velocity of the carts Controlled Variable(s): · The factor(s) that must be kept the same in order to make the experiment a fair test. · Length of the wooden base · Material of the ramp · Type of cart used · Environment where experiment is performed · Stopwatch used for results.
