APPLIED ESSAY + PRESENTATION This paper is a practical application of the theoretical ideas and methodologies examined in this class through a sustained formal and critical analysis of a work of art of the student's choice. Central to this investigation is the question: What are the critical and theoretical grounds for an engaged art practice in our contemporary social and geo/political context? 1.SELECT A CONTEMPORARY WORK OF ART DUE OCTOBER 26 (IMAGE OF THE ARTWORK + INFO) Students will select a contemporary work of art of their choice that provokes or invites dialogue and questioning and has critical and/or cultural significance. (Students may choose the work they used for the image presentation in class.) This is not a research paper. However, students should exercise due diligence in consulting peer reviewed sources to find information about the work's immediate historical, socio/political context and/or viewing reception. The biography of the artist is peripheral to this project unless directly related to the subject matter of the work. However, a close reading of the formal aspects of the work as signifying elements is crucial in order to understand how the work directs itself to be seen. 2. SELECT TWO RELEVANT COURSE READINGS THAT WILL SERVE AS A THEORETICAL LENS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF YOUR ARTWORK Students will identify two readings from the term that offer up a relevant critical framework for analysis of the work, and how it functions within a particular historically rooted viewing context. Students should explain how the visual elements within the work support their theoretical analysis and consider what possibilities the work holds for critical engagement. 3. PREPARE 5 -10 MINUTE PRESENTATION | DUE ON YOUR PRESENTATION DATE (NOV 23, 30 + DEC 7) Towards the end of term, students will give a 5-10-minute presentation, introducing their work (with an image please), its context and why this work was chosen i.e. the aspects of the work (its formal features, subject matter or reception) that drew them to the work. Students should also identify the selected theoretical texts they will be using, and how they will use them to open up a new way of seeing this work. 4. APPLIED ESSAY DUE ON DAY OF FINAL EXAM Students will then work up their analysis into a formal paper. The paper should be approximately 2,000- 2,500 words or 6-8 pages double spaced text in a readable font. The paper should demonstrate a clear understanding of the theoretical framework being used and a rationale for its relevance in relation to the chosen work. Using the formal aspects of the work as an anchor it should reveal the ways in which these frameworks can create a richer understanding of the work and its viewing function. EVALUATION CRITERIA PRESENTATION (5%) • Choice of work - thoughtfulness of selection and rationale for choosing it • Understanding of work's context (relevant issues it intersects with and its reception) • Relevance of selected theoretical text to the work chosen • Demonstration of good critical engagement of selected texts to date • Adequate preparation and organization of ideas APPLIED ESSAY (25%) • Ideas are communicated clearly, in an organized and cohesive essay • Essay should be free of grammatical and spelling errors. • Formal analysis has depth and provokes the reader to "see" or "open up" aspects of the work that require further investigation • Understanding and explanation of the theoretical models used for critical engagement with the work • Integration of critical analysis with formal evidence within the work • Plausibility of analysis with respect to the historical or contemporary context of the work's production and reception. • Sophistication of argument
