Introduction
Authority is an ultimate thing in an organization that gives a person or unofficial and advantage for controlling the juniors and the subordinates for an effective organizational operation. But in some cases this perspective of authority is misused which results in adverse effe
cts and produces negativity which is termed as the abuse of power. This contemplates the negative aspects of use of power within an organization. It is affected to understand that power is the byproduct of power. A person in authority can use the power in any way. But the use of power can lead to negative consequences within an organization. This can be particularly referred to as malfeasance and serious actions must be taken in order to enhance the organizational culture and restrain from organizational politics. The aspects of organizational politics and the leadership prospects shapes the organizational power structure determines the organizational culture. Therefore, such aspects are interrelated in an organizational framework that is effective to influence the issues of sexual harassment in the organization.
One of the significant example that is commonly observed as an abuse of power by an authority is sexual harassment of the employees in an organization. The aspect of power in connection with the aforementioned example will be discussed in the following section contemplating with the organizational behavior theory of power and politics, leadership theory and organizational culture theory.
Sexual Harassment & Abuse of Power in an Organization
Feminist researches confirms that sexual harassment in an organization is an aspect of power and it is evidently and iteration of power of the superiors on the subordinates. Sexual harassment is evidently an abuse of power and it is used to control and sustain inequalities within the organization. Sexual harassment is more prevalent with bullying and harassing women employees within the organization (Cobb & Horeck, 2018). The changing social aspects and dynamic social relations have proceeded to give privileges to the historically oppressed section of the society. But some authority resist inclusion and presents themselves as a powerful authority by harassing the operation section sexually through their unchecked power.
Sexual harassment is not just an aspect of lust and love within an organization. It is a byproduct of unequal power structure and is evidently an aspect of imbalance within the society which results from an uneven distribution of power amongst the men and the women. Workplace is considered to be a social sphere which reflects prospects of a society and promotes effective organizational culture. Sexual harassment in workplace is not a new issue but what is significant to this aspect is the accountability of organizational leadership and the transparency within the organization.
Sexual harassment at workplace on women by sexual bullying, threats and pressure adversely affects the safety, wellbeing and health, thereby affects the productivity of an employee in an organization. Sexual harassment in an organization is not just a problem for the women who are encountering it but it also threatens the management issues within an organization and victimizes the employer. It leads to serious organizational complications and affects the organizational culture. The aspect of power is the source of such organizational issues in the workplace and this reflects the abuse of power in the organization.
This assignment criticizes the aspect of power in the organization in connection to the issue of sexual harassment which perpetually has a negative impact on the; Workability of the employees, bad working environment, waste of working hours and loss of manpower.
Critical Analysis
Feminist theories have always contemplated the fact that power is the source of sexual harassment which is rarely measured or directed within the workplace. The workplace culture and politics is guided by a set of principles and aspects that are dominated by the age-old patriarchal tradition which is portrayed by the male supervisors by harassing the female subordinates. This is not just a theory of sexuality and human behavior but it has been contemplated with the power threat theories that suggest that women in the authority are frequently targets where the male bosses show their power. It has been found that male supervisors are more comfortable in reporting the aspects of sexual harassment within his organization (Ross et al., 2018). Sexual harassment is usually used as a tool in an organization that was sorted as a measure against an equalizer against women in power and is motivated by the control and domination than by sexual desire.
Sexual harassment is often treated as sex discrimination which is used as a tool to unwelcome the sexual advances and requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that interfere with employee's performance or create a hostile environment at the workplace. Feminist research has always contemplated sexual harassment as a degree of discrimination that is linked with the sex based in equality and patriarchal gender relations to everyday workplace interactions.
