The discrimination behaviour towards the transgender people of the society is addressed since the history when they were treated as de
mons. The history has created a stigma in the society and has led to several misconceptions about the third gender. As expressed by a 21-year-old Trans-woman in Syria, they are not offered any employment when found to be identified, as males in their Identity Card but they represent as a woman (Human Rights Watch, 2019). They lack a home, family, employment and the basic standards of living, which can be improved by the government through enforcement of laws.
They can lead their life well if given a chance and accepted in several sectors of the society. Instead, they are arrested and tagged as criminals with falsified crimes imposed on them. The justice system is discriminatory towards the transgender people in due to the effect of marginalisation. As argued by McCann and Brown (2018), such discriminatory behaviour creates vulnerability among the transgender group of people and increases the psychological risks, which may lead them to take adverse actions.
Several transgender people indulge in drug addiction and other unhealthy practices due to their position in the society. The lack of employment and unacceptance by the society mainly due to the social stigma leads them to such activities, which can be eradicated by identifying them as a third gender. As supported by Hernandez (2020), the transgender people are termed as ‘they’ and not provided an identity in the society. The tension rises when they are prejudiced through such behaviour towards them, hence involving in unhealthy sexual practices spreading HIV in the community.
A proper chance to be employed will give them a chance to display their capacity and they too can achieve their goals sustaining in the society. The discriminatory behaviour towards the trans-people often begins from home. The family members could not accept their trans-child and exhibited domestic violence on them. Such unacceptance and abuse is experienced by the transgender group of people since childhood, which makes them violent towards the society. Even if they are given a chance to attend school and complete their education, the humiliation and bully they experiences from the so called ‘normal’ students damages their confidence affecting their self-esteem.
