Table 1: Financial Leverage Ratios of Cummins Inc. (Source: Yahoo Finance)
Given that Cummins's debt ratios appear to be lower than they were in the past and that the company still has billions in cash & short-term investments available for use in the business, we may conclude that the company is doing a good job of financing its assets.
Interest coverage ratio of the company has remained more than 20 times in all the last 4 years, this means that the company has service its interest obligations upto 20 times from its earnings from operations.
Particularly when investing in a big firm like Cummins, bonds come with a number of risks to think about, including interest rate risk, inflationary & liquidity risk, reinvestment risk, and bond credit/default risk.
Bonds issued by the corporation are utilised as issued debts in order to raise money. The key tenet is that, based purely on its prospects, cash flows, and profitability, the company will be able to repay those bonds. Due to the substantial danger of the company's low profitability, there is a great deal of risk involved with the bonds that the corporation has issued. According to Table 1, Cummins' debt to equity ratio decreased from 2019 to 2020, indicating that the ratio of total debt to total shareholder equity is now lower than it was previously. This is a result of the business's decision to refrain from using debt as a means of supporting Cummins' expansion. Additionally, between 2020 and 2021, Cummins' debt to assets ratio improved, indicating that a bigger proportion of its assets were not financed with debt. Instead, the business looked into novel approaches and developed concepts that increased revenue.
