Your final product will be a research booklet and a poster that will be used to promote your selected solution. TASK: You must: A. Complete each step in the research booklet. B. Produce a poster to promote your selected solution to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. ASSESSMENT: Your work will be marked in two parts: 1. Research and analysis of data and information – this will be demonstrated in the completion of the Research Booklet. Your teacher will assess the research booklet- this will account for criteria 1-3 for the assessment. 2. The poster itself. It must clearly explain and justify a range of benefits relating to your selected solution to greenhouse gas emissions. Your research will cover the following: 1. General background of the company and its operations 2. A survey of the public to determine general knowledge about BHP as a company and the link between their industry, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. 3. Detailed research to answer two inquiry questions of your choice regarding BHP 4. Give details of the impact of mining on the environment, the economy, and on the company’s employees, worldwide. 5. Explain clearly the problem of greenhouse gas emissions associated with BHP Billiton 6. Clearly use a matrix and criteria to demonstrate how a decision making process can be used to judge the solution BHP might use to overcome the issue of mining and its links to climate change. 7. Make a decision as to which solution is preferable. 8. Predict the outcomes and consequences of the chosen solution. 9. Demonstrate correct use of APA in-text referencing and a complete bibliography. 10. Include a range of relevant geographical terminology (highlight by using red italics throughout your work – see glossary on Blackboard). RESEARCH BOOKLET: Type into the document and it will expand – the line length is an indicator of how much to type. RESEARCH BOOKLET:
Type into the document and it will expand – the line length is an indicator of how much to type.
Step 1
Analysis of spatial and graphed data regarding BHP
Using the “Data Sheet BHP” on Blackboard, complete the activities below to develop an understanding of BHP as a multi-national company.
1. Write a statement to describe the products that BHP produces and their relative weighting regarding amount produced in 2020.
Iron ore (248 million tonnes), Metallurgical coal (41 million tonnes), Nickel (80 kilotons), natural gas (360 bcf), Crude oil (49MMboe), energy coal (23 million tonnes) are the products that are produced by BHP.
2. Refer to the global map – Figure 8. Where are the company offices clustered?
Australia.
3. When was BHP rebranded from BHP Billiton to just BHP?
In 2017
4. How many people did BHP employ globally (in total) in 2020?
Approximately, 33000 people were employed by BHP in 2020
5. How many people did BHP employ in Australia in 2020?
Approximately, 21000
6. Has BHP become more important as an employer or less important, since 2012? Use statistics in your answer as evidence.
In 2012, more than 40,000 people were employed by BHP but in 2020 the number gets decreased to approximately 33,000. It becomes a less employer since 2012.
7. Describe BHP’s changing revenue since 2005 from Figure 7. Use statistics in your answer. You should be able to identify THREE differing stages.
In stage 1, the revenue was increased in 2005 to 2011, and maximum revenue was collected in 2008, which was aroung 60,000 million US dollars. In second stage, it starts decreasing and in 2016, it the minimum revenue was obtained which, was around 30,000 million US dollars. In stage 3, it starts increasing and from 2018 to 20 it is almost same, which is around 40,000 US million dollars
8. How many BHP offices are there in Australia?
5
9. Refer to Fig 8 to answer the following:
    Type of Resource Mining Operation
    Number in Australia
    Number
globally
    Petroleum
    4
    11
    Aluminium
    1
    7
    Base Metal

    Carbon Steel
    6
    8
    Diamonds
    2
    4
    Energy Coal
    3
    7
    Stainless Steel
    4
    5
10. What does the data in the table above suggest about the importance of Australian operations to BHP?
It suggests that ~ 45% of the mining operations are located in Australia only.
11. Refer to Fig 9. How have operations in Australia changed since 2005, 2014 and into the future? Use statistics if possible in your answer.
The assets were changed from 50 to 41 from 2005 to 2014 and it is likely to reduce to 19 in future.
The operate assets were 33 in 2005 which has decreased to 30 in 2014. In future, it is expected to decrease to 12.
12. Why is coking coal so important?
It is used to make steal.
13. How is BHP linked to greenhouse gas emissions? Use statistics in your answer.
BHP is responsible for 177,54 million tonnes of carbon emission. Carbon dioxide is one of the gases that is responsible for green-house effect.
14. In what way has the Australian government been associated with increased greenhouse gas emissions?
Australia is the biggest miner and coking coal produces which produces million tonnes of Carbon dioxide.
15. What is the difference between Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?
Scope 1 and 2 covers an organization’s direct and indirect emissions. Scope 3 emissions when company’s products are used.
16. Aside from increasing greenhouse gas emissions, what other environmental damage has BHP been responsible for?
BHP is responsible for other Environmental damages such as shock waves.
17. Provide a quote from the data sheet that indicates that BHP is planning to improve its emissions into the future.
The quote that indicates that BHP is planning to improve its emissions is “BHP would develop technology to curb carbon emission both inside and outside the company. From next-year it will set a medium-term science-based decarbonisation target.
18. What is the main message of the cartoon in Fig 3. Refer to specific features in the cartoon in your explanation.
The cartoon indicates to the green-house effect caused due to carbon emission.
19. Use the data sheet to find FOUR pieces of evidence to justify BHP Billiton’s status as a “multi-national company.”
a. It is providing employment globally.
b. Their offices are located globally.
c. They have mining resources around the globe.
d. It’s impact can be seen in other parts of the world.
Step 2
Gathering primary data to find out how much the public know about BHP and the issue of greenhouse gas emissions
Design a survey of five questions to find out how much the public know about BHP Billiton and the issue of greenhouse gas emissions. Questions should be based around general knowledge about BHP as a MNC and its impact on the environment. Analyse the results using relevant graphs.
The teacher will go through with you in class how to design relevant survey questions and how to design a survey using SurveyMonkey. Record your results and analysis below.
The five questions that has been included in the survey of 1000 people are:
1. Have you ever heard about BHP? Y/N
2. Are you familiar about green-house effect? Y/N
3. Do you think BHP plays an important role in carbon-emissions? Y/N
4. What do you think is the biggest environmental hazard caused by BHP? Pollution, Global Warming, Others
5. How can BHP prevent carbon emissions? Use of renewable source, increasing combustible price, decarbonisation plants, others
What do you think is the biggest environmental hazard caused by BHP?
How can BHP prevent carbon emissions?
Step 3: Designing significant geographic questions
Design questions that relate to BHP. Remember that you are aiming to design higher order questions, not lower order questions.
Once you have completed that matrix select TWO of the higher order questions to focus your...
