SCENARIO:
You have been employed by the multi-national company, BHP, to research aspects of current concern for BHP, and to suggest possible solutions to the problem of increasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the mining industry.
Your final product will be a research booklet and a poster that will be used to promote your selected solution.
TASK:
You must:
A. Complete each step in the research booklet.
B. Produce a poster to promote your selected solution to increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
ASSESSMENT:
Your work will be marked in two parts:
1. Research and analysis of data and information – this will be demonstrated in the completion of the Research Booklet. Your teacher will assess the research booklet- this will account for criteria 1-3 for the assessment.
2. The poster itself. It must clearly explain and justify a range of benefits relating to your selected solution to greenhouse gas emissions.
Your research will cover the following:
1. General background of the company and its operations
2. A survey of the public to determine general knowledge about BHP as a company and the link between their industry, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
3. Detailed research to answer two inquiry questions of your choice regarding BHP
4. Give details of the impact of mining on the environment, the economy, and on the company’s employees, worldwide.
5. Explain clearly the problem of greenhouse gas emissions associated with BHP Billiton
6. Clearly use a matrix and criteria to demonstrate how a decision making process can be used to judge the solution BHP might use to overcome the issue of mining and its links to climate change.
7. Make a decision as to which solution is preferable.
8. Predict the outcomes and consequences of the chosen solution.
9. Demonstrate correct use of APA in-text referencing and a complete bibliography.
10. Include a range of relevant geographical terminology (highlight by using red italics throughout your work – see glossary on Blackboard).

Analysis of spatial and graphed data regarding BHP
Using the “Data Sheet BHP” on Blackboard, complete the activities below to develop an understanding of BHP as a multi-national company.
1. Write a statement to describe the products that BHP produces and their relative weighting regarding amount produced in 2020.
Iron ore (248 million tonnes), Metallurgical coal (41 million tonnes), Nickel (80 kilotons), natural gas (360 bcf), Crude oil (49MMboe), energy coal (23 million tonnes) are the products that are produced by BHP.
2. Refer to the global map – Figure 8. Where are the company offices clustered?

4. How many people did BHP employ globally (in total) in 2020?
Approximately, 33000 people were employed by BHP in 2020

In 2012, more than 40,000 people were employed by BHP but in 2020 the number gets decreased to approximately 33,000. It becomes a less employer since 2012.
7. Describe BHP’s changing revenue since 2005 from Figure 7. Use statistics in your answer. You should be able to identify THREE differing stages.
In stage 1, the revenue was increased in 2005 to 2011, and maximum revenue was collected in 2008, which was aroung 60,000 million US dollars. In second stage, it starts decreasing and in 2016, it the minimum revenue was obtained which, was around 30,000 million US dollars. In stage 3, it starts increasing and from 2018 to 20 it is almost same, which is around 40,000 US million dollars

Design a survey of five questions to find out how much the public know about BHP Billiton and the issue of greenhouse gas emissions. Questions should be based around general knowledge about BHP as a MNC and its impact on the environment. Analyse the results using relevant graphs.
