Broken Hill Proprietary’s rich history began in a silver, lead and zinc mine in Broken Hill, Australia. It officially became a company in 1885. BHP engaged in the discovery, development, production and marketing of iron ore, copper, oil and gas, diamonds, silver, lead, zinc and a range of other natural resources. BHP was also a market leader in value-added flat steel products. Billiton’s roots trace back to 1851 and a tin mine on a little known island in Indonesia, Billiton (Belitung) island. Billiton became a global leader in the metals and mining sector and a major producer of aluminium and alumina, chrome and manganese ores and alloys, steaming coal, nickel and titanium minerals. Billiton also developed a substantial and growing copper portfolio. The two companies merged in 2001 to become BHP Billiton, creating the world leading resources company with a value of approximately $38 billion. BHP Billiton will be run by a unified Board and management team, with headquarters in Melbourne, Australia and a significant corporate management centre in London. IT was rebranded as BHP in 2017. The tragedy caused shockwaves around the world, including in Australia. Coalmining in Australia by the nation’s six biggest coal producers ultimately results in more greenhouse gas emissions each year than the entire domestic economy. Figure 12 Australian Carbon Emissions by Company Figure 13 Decarbonisation Goals BHP is the world’s biggest listed miner and biggest coking coal producer. Combined with iron ore, also mined by BHP, coking coal is used to make steel, producing millions of tonnes of CO2. CEO Andrew Mackenzie said BHP would develop technology to curb emissions both inside and outside the company. From next year it will set a medium-term, science-based decarbonisation target, he said. “We won’t stop at the mine gate. We will also increase our focus on Scope 3 emissions,” he said. Emissions are divided into categories. Scope 1 and 2 cover an organisation’s direct emissions and indirect emissions generated by power it buys to run its operations. Scope 3 emissions occur when a company’s products are used, as in steelmaking. Student declaration By submitting this item, I declare that the work submitted: · is my own work and has not been written by any other person, · contains no plagiarised material, and has not been obtained from any other source except where due acknowledgement has been made. 7 SCENARIO: You have been employed by the multi-national company, BHP, to research aspects of current concern for BHP, and to suggest possible solutions to the problem of increasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the mining industry. Your final product will be a research booklet and a poster that will be used to promote your selected solution. TASK: You must: A. Complete each step in the research booklet. B. Produce a poster to promote your selected solution to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. ASSESSMENT: Your work will be marked in two parts: 1. Research and analysis of data and information – this will be demonstrated in the completion of the Research Booklet. Your teacher will assess the research booklet- this will account for criteria 1-3 for the assessment. 2. The poster itself. It must clearly explain and justify a range of benefits relating to your selected solution to greenhouse gas emissions. Your research will cover the following: 1. General background of the company and its operations 2. A survey of the public to determine general knowledge about BHP as a company and the link between their industry, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. 3. Detailed research to answer two inquiry questions of your choice regarding BHP 4. Give details of the impact of mining on the environment, the economy, and on the company’s employees, worldwide. 5. Explain clearly the problem of greenhouse gas emissions associated with BHP Billiton 6. Clearly use a matrix and criteria to demonstrate how a decision making process can be used to judge the solution BHP might use to overcome the issue of mining and its links to climate change. 7. Make a decision as to which solution is preferable. 8. Predict the outcomes and consequences of the chosen solution. 9. Demonstrate correct use of APA in-text referencing and a complete bibliography. 10. Include a range of relevant geographical terminology (highlight by using red italics throughout your work – see glossary on Blackboard). RESEARCH BOOKLET: Type into the document and it will expand – the line length is an indicator of how much to type. Step 1 Analysis of spatial and graphed data regarding BHP Using the “Data Sheet BHP” on Blackboard, complete the activities below to develop an understanding of BHP as a multi-national company. 1. Write a statement to describe the products that BHP produces and their relative weighting regarding amount produced in 2020. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Questions should be based around general knowledge about BHP as a MNC and its impact on the environment. Analyse the results using relevant graphs. The teacher will go through with you in class how to design relevant survey questions and how to design a survey using SurveyMonkey. Record your results and analysis below. Step 3: Designing significant geographic questions Design questions that relate to BHP. Remember that you are aiming to design higher order questions, not lower order questions. Once you have completed that matrix select TWO of the higher order questions to focus your research about BHP on. Write these in the space below: Event what Situation where/when Alternatives which People who Reasons why Means how Present Is 1 What is BHP’s main product? 2 3 4 5 Why is BHP linked to greenhouse gas emissions? 6 Past Did/was 7 8 9 10 11 12 Possibility Can 13 14 Where can Australia source renewable energy from? 15 16 17 18 How can Australia generate more renewable energy?
