lab_01 Lab Work 01 – FEC Simulation FOG AND EDGE COMPUTING 1 Considering that the Fog and Edge Computing (FEC) are relatively new, developing and evaluating novel FEC ideas in a simulation environment is preferred when the realistic infrastructure is not available. Researchers also opt for simulation to avoid the setup cost and the over-complicated process of setting up the dynamic infrastructure. This choice also becomes inevitable when running repeated experiments require infrastructure re-configurations multiple times. However, simulating a realistic environment is itself a complex process. In literature, several simulation frameworks are presented and utilised by researchers for demonstrating the viability of their proposed solutions. Harnessing the use of a particular simulation framework/toolkit is greatly driven by the application requirements. You are asked to conduct research on the available open-source FEC simulation tools that have been used by the FEC researchers. You are required to prepare a brief report (4-5 pages in addition to the title page and references) on your findings. Focus and provide a summary on the following aspects when you carry out literature review (only consider the article/papers that are published since 2015): - Provide a one paragraph summary of the simulator - Is the simulator an extension of existing toolkit or built from scratch? - The supported features for environment configuration - List of supported evaluation metrics - Number of studies in which the simulator appeared for evaluation purpose (also provide references to article/papers) - Experimentation scenarios or case studies mostly used for? - Code repository link (Is the project still active?) - And any other interesting aspects you want to emphasize on… Following is a list of some recently published articles that will help you get started … • Margariti, Spiridoula V. and Dimakopoulos, Vassilios V. and Tsoumanis, Georgios, Modeling and Simulation Tools for Fog Computing—A Comprehensive Survey from a Cost Perspective • Carlo Puliafito, Diogo M. Gonçalves, Márcio M. Lopes, Leonardo L. Martins, Edmundo Madeira, Enzo Mingozzi, Omer Rana, Luiz F. Bittencourt, MobFogSim: Simulation of mobility and migration for fog computing • Redowan Mahmud and Rajkumar Buyya, Modelling and Simulation of Fog and Edge Computing Environments using iFogSim Toolkit Submission After completing the report upload it as a PDF file (use the IEEE double column format) on Moodle by the deadline.

Mobile Cloud Computing
Value
The teaching-learning process has experienced a paradigm shift from classroom teaching to online mobile based learning model. Mobile devices integrated wit
h cloud-based learning platform have become a necessity and numerous software applications for various domains have come into existence, each one with specific learning activities. Mobile platforms and applications are trending as communication platforms in most educational and industrial organizations. This has led to enhancement in capabilities of smart devices to work as virtual classroom and the innovative tools shall manage the learning environment digitally covering every aspect of education and profession. However, there are certain challenges that they face in integrating the business model with cloud based mobile computing.
Devices that are required to enable cloud technology to be integrated with mobile learning include mobile computers, tablets, laptops, mobile phones, digital camera, navigation devices, wearable computers. These devices can be characterized in [6] by volume of devices, continuous use, video and audio content, applications and platforms, consumerism and gamification.
If we can outline the challenges that mobile cloud computing witnesses in order to facilitate mobile learning, we can do further research to address each of the challenges which will act as a guide for building mobile learning applications. We research and identify the challenges that different authors witnessed while implementing mobile cloud computing for mobile learning.
Research Question
What are the challenges that can be explored in developing and using Cloud-based mobile learning and what guidelines should be followed by developers to build cloud-based mobile learning?
Justification
Mobile learning has proved its significance through research. The authors of [5] claim that more than one fourth of users in the world use their smartphones to access the Internet. Learning can thus be moved into the scope of mobile learning. New technologies that facilitate mobile learning include social media, cloud computing and big data. The mobile learning concept is very promising since it allows learners to obtain learnings and education from any location with the help of portable devices with internet connectivity. Cloud-based mobile learning is a...
