People assume “Leadership” and “Power” means the same. But they are not. But in true words, we can say that power comes being a leader. It’s a part of leadership. Techni
cally we can say that power is a section of leadership that can be of different shapes and forms. Some people assume that if they are given a leader position, they have been given the power. Yes, the power is automatically given to the person promoted to a leader, but it is very necessary to understand power bounds. A balance is much needed. If should not exceed to being harsh to their subordinates, otherwise they leaders would lose their respect. The equation between leadership and power is very complicated. So, it needs to be handled by the leader to understand the situation and shift its type of power required to handle the sub-ordinates to get their work done efficiently.
Let me give you a real time organization example. Every person, who is newly given a leadership position, might get confused about its position and power. In fact it is the first hurdle for a leader to understand the relationship between leadership and power. Say if I am given an assignment, actually first assignment as myself being a leader, there would be numerous thoughts going on in my head. It would a flood of good emotions, bad thoughts, nervousness and decision making consciousness. All these emotions: good emotions as my hard work that pays off today with my position, Increasing bad thoughts of not failing to the expectations of my superiors, nervousness of performing better than before, not only me but to give the best output by the team and doubting of not able to handle team.
Until or unless we are not through an assignment as a leader, we may doubt our decisions and expect someone to look after the critical decisions to avoid further laggings. Now our aspiration to influence our seniors with our work and team handling abilities, we may turn into a ruler who has absolute power.
