Tourism Activity – Individual Assignment 1. Select a local, national, or international tourist destination 1. You will work individually on this activity (it is not a group project). 1. 1.Destination Analysis: Based on what you have learned in this course, your research, and your life experience (it is a good idea to focus on a destination you visited in the recent past), analyze the destination’s following tourism sectors and highlight each one’s strengths and weaknesses (please label each sub-section): 1. a. Technology and information/promotion (e.g., the destination’s official tourist website, its information/promotion activities, social media presence, its tourist information center, etc.), 1. b. Lodging (Describe the existence of the destination’s different lodging properties and categories. You may want to discuss their pricing and service levels, 1. c. Food and Beverage (Describe the destination’s different food and beverage establishments and categories. You may want to discuss pricing and service levels), 1. d. Transportation System (Describe the destination’s different modes of transportation; e.g., taxis, train, metro, buses, water transportation, airports, etc.). You may want to describe availability, efficiency, and cost, 1. e. Attractions and Recreational Activities (List the destination’s man-made and nature-made attractions. You may want to describe the existence of unique attractions and accessibility level and cost), 1. f. Facilities and Services (e.g. tour companies, currency exchange, meetings and conventions space, etc.). 1. 2. Locals: Discuss local residents’ help and friendliness when interacting with visitors as well as HRT professionals’ expertise, efficiency of friendliness to visitors. You may also want to describe local residents’ (non-HRT professionals) acceptance of tourism and how they treat visitors. 1. 3. Perceptions Describe how the destination is perceived by past visitors and the media (you may want to research input/discussions from past visitors on TripAdvisor and other social media outlets). Do you feel the destination’s tourism system (e.g., lodging, food and beverage, transportation system, attractions and recreational activities) is meeting or can meet various market segments’ (e.g., singles, family, children, elderly, religious, ethnic, business, physically challenged, sports, honeymoon, high income, middle income, lower income, LGBTQ+, etc.) needs and wants? 1. 4. Recommendations & Action Plan Present your recommendations on an Action Plan that the destination may implement to capitalize on its strengths and work on its weaknesses. Your recommendations may focus on product(s) and service(s) development, marketing, educational, and public relations. 1. You need to focus on articles (academic or trade) that are recent (2016 and above). You need to research two articles relevant to your topic (e.g., academic journals, travel newspapers, magazines, internet, and books. 1. The paper needs to consist of 5 pages (not including title, contents and reference pages) double-spaced/12 pt. Roman Times. 1. The Tourism Activity paper needs to consist of the following: 1. Cover Page, 2 Table of Contents, 3. Introduction (What you want the reader to learn from your paper. You may also want to introduce the different sections of your paper), 4. Destination Analysis (a., b., c., d., e , f.) 2. Locals, 3. Perceptions, 4. Recommendations and Action Plan, 8. Conclusion and 8. References. 1. Students are expected to label each section and sub-section. 1. The Recommendation and Action Plan should be the focus of your paper (in length and content). Students are expected to reference information from the materials they researched (in-text citation and quotation citation need to be in APA format). Under Recommendations, students may also reference concepts from the textbook to suppor your points (APA format – quotation citation and in-text citation). 1. Students are expected to follow proper citations and ethical guidelines while working on their paper. 1. You need to check your paper before submission using Turnitin. 1.
