How challenging do you think this assignment would be? To what degree will Nick’s start-up experience in the US help him be effective starting McDonald’s restaurants in China?   This assignment will be incredibly challenging for Nick. I can relate because I am a Veteran with the USAF and have traveled a few times, even overseas. Luckily for him things like Skype and FaceTime can make it easier for his family to keep in touch with him. With the experience that Nick gained while working in the US will be a great advantage for him. The only thing challenging is how to understand the culture and how to develop the new restaurants by the standards of China. The cross-culture training will better assist Nick in the aspects of the job.   2. How can language and cross-cultural training help Nick and his family adjust to Chinese culture?   “It's no secret that today's workplace is rapidly becoming vast, as the business environment expands to include various geographic locations and span numerous cultures. What can be difficult, however, is understanding how to communicate effectively with individuals who speak another language, or who rely on different means to reach a common goal” (M & B, n.d.). This will make them feel comfortable when they go grocery shopping, exploring the country, and communicating with the locals and neighbors.   3. If Ella goes to China for a year, how might that decision impact her career? What are her chances of working for the local law firm when she returns from China?   If Ella goes to China, she will have a gap of unemployment on her resume. This may bring up questions to the local firm when she applies. Then say if they do hire her what are the chances that she might leave again due to her husbands’ job? She me be looked at as an unreliable employee. They may see her as using their firm as temporary employment. The one good side of this, however, with her language and cross-country training can help her if the firm wants to expand internationally.   4. What would you do if you were Nick? Go alone to China or ask Ella, Jenny, and Luke to accompany you?   I would go alone to China without the family if I was Nick. This is only a temporary assignment and it will go by fast. By the time they settle in China they will have to move again. Speaking from experience my husband went overseas for a year. We communicated everyday and it went by fast. Ella will be able to continue working on her career and the children will not have to be pulled away from school and their friends.   M., & B. (n.d.). How challenging do you think this assignment would be? To what degree will Nick’s start-up experience in the US help him be effective starting McDonald’s restaurants in China? The assignment that entails Nick to move to China for a year sparks up challenges and some concerns. Nick will undergo problems regardless of if his family decides to accompany him or not. The first issue that will be challenging is the culture change. China and the U.S not only have polar differences but also the language barrier. This in itself can cause Nick to be highly stressed - again, with or without his family. If Nick decided to partake in this journey alone, he will most likely suffer with loneliness. On the contrary, if Nick’s family joins him they will be stressed as well. Nick’s start up experience in the US will help him navigate the roles that he’ll be assigned in China. He has already been familiar with the workings of the business for 10 years, so migrating to Chinese territory shouldn’t be too difficult for him.     0. How can language and cross-cultural training help Nick and his family adjust to Chinese culture? Language and cross-cultural training can ease the stress of culture shock for the family. Blindy picking up your life and moving to a different country without help would make matters even harder for the family. So training will help prepare the family on what to expect, whether its food differences, human interaction, or navigating around the city. Training will increase culture awareness. “Intercultural training allows a greater understanding of the norms typical of their host-cultures: helping them attract and identify the best local talent to ensure the long-term performance” (Learnlight, 2020).   0. If Ella goes to China for a year, how might that decision impact her career? What are her chances of working for the local law firm when she returns from China? If Ella decides to defer for a year, it can negatively impact her career in the long term. Not practicing law for a year can affect Ella when arriving back to the states. Whether it was being off for a year or fear of loss of experience, employers might be hesitant on hiring her. Her resume will have to depict this time off - where employers might question her reliableness. This will also put a strain on Ella because her student loans won’t be able to be paid off. Ella’s chances to work for the local law firm when she returns, is low. Most likely that job will be handed to someone else.    0. What would you do if you were Nick? Go alone to China or ask Ella, Jenny and Luke to accompany you? If I were Nick, I would decide to go to China alone. Being that I would be opening up an extreme amount of McDonald’s stores - that already puts me at high stress. Bringing my family along and having them move everything they worked for would cause me to feel like a burden. This is my career, it shouldn’t affect anyone else’s. My daughter should be able to play her sports, and my wife worked so hard to become a lawyer and get that job! Another issue that arises is having my family occasionally be alone in a foreign country. Removing my family from what is “normal” and placing them somewhere “abnormal” can be damaging. Moving my family with me carries more cons than pros.    Learnlight Insights. (n.d.). The benefits of cross-cultural training. I agree with Elizabeth that initiating business in China will be a challenging task for Nick, especially when there is a considerable difference in terms of culture and tradition in China from the US. The fast-food concepts in the US are different from the concepts in China. There are possibilities that the Chinese population will prefer their local fast foods and may not accept McDonald...
