No matter where we are in the world, getting the right people in the room to do the right work is critical to organizational success. This means working with the organization to think about how best to ensure people at all levels of the organization and of all backgrounds can contribute”(Katz & Miller, 2016). I think that after reading this case about the Henry Ford Health System, that they are off to a good start but there is more work to be done. In the text, they talk about hiring processes and inclusion. While it is great that every year they consciously hire a set number of minorities and women, I am more inclined to agree that to fully be inclusive, you do so by “ensuring that an organization’s culture and interactions support individuals of all identities and their different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences to contribute to enhance problem solving and innovation” (Katz & Miller, 2016).
To achieve this, after hiring with diversity in mind, another initiative the organization can take is educate the hires on biases, both conscious and unconscious acts and how to overcome them. These biases can hinder performance in the long run and helping to gain understanding will enhance communication and help others feel more comfortable with sharing.
Another this that can be done, is to talk with the employees to establish rapport and get an understanding of how they work. All these things can “shift in what is valued, who is at the table, how people interact, and how work gets done. When inclusion is the common language of the organization, people understand one another more quickly and more accurately. They have the sense of safety needed to speak up, make problems visible, and address problems quickly rather than being afraid of being the dissenting voice or the bearer of bad news. As a result, problem solving, and decision making are accelerated, and waste is eliminated”(Katz & Miller, 2016).
I think that the Henry Ford Health System, is doing more than what is currently expected but I think it will exceed its own expectations if the initiatives above and others are implemented and continued.
