What are positive and negative implications of analysing health equity vs. health equality?
Sometimes the words "equity" and "equality," which are related, are used interchangeably. An equitable approach focuses on more equal outcomes while acknowledging that disadvantaged groups may need more assistance or resources in order to achieve the same health outcomes as more advantaged groups. Generally, equality is thought to exist when all individuals and groups of people are treated equally, regardless of need or outcome.
Equity stratifies, or measures of inequality, are often social constructs that take into account factors like gender, place of residence, degree of education, or money. Health disparities frequently result from social inequalities because they share many characteristics with other inequalities, including wealth distribution, socioeconomic status, and learning results. Large health inequities also exist in societies with high levels of social and economic inequality (Leslie et al. 2018). Therefore, health is a reliable indicator of economic and social development.
We can recognize discrepancies that are a component of the process through which health inequities are developing by measuring health inequalities.
