THE SAVE THE CHILDREN FUNDS
Introduction
The Save the Children Funds is an organization which was established in the year 1919 in order to deliver better education, healthy foods, healthcare facilities and providing emergency services and assistance during natural disaster, war and conflicts. The organization is a not for profit charitable trust which is created by two women Eglantyne Jebb and her sister Dorothy Buxton to help the poor and the needy children o
f the society and alleviate starvation among the children of Germany and Austria-Hungary during the World War 1. In this paper we will discuss on the financial aspects of the company. We will analyse the financial statement and conduct a ratio analysis of the charitable organization. This will eventually help us to analyse the challenges faced and benefits obtained by the organization while functioning all through these years. It will also help us to analyse whether the company is preparing its financial statement in according with the accounting standards or not. Finally, if the company prepares the financial statement in accordance with the accounting standards then it is likely that frauds and misappropriation of funds can be avoided. Thus, it can be them stated that the company is acquiring the funds from the various organizations is ultimately channelized towards the development of the poor people of the society.
Identify and evaluate the impact the economy has on business organizations
The gross domestic product (GDP) of United Kingdom has been impacted greatly due to the escalating trade protectionism and partly due to the global covid-19 pandemic situation. Also, there was Brexit where Britain withdrawn itself from the European Union which resulted in business uncertainties and weak growth in the economy of both Britain and European Unions. As per the survey by Bank of England, it is discovered that the economy will remain subdued even in the years to come. There have been situations where people have lost their jobs; manufacturing sectors which is the backbone of most economy have been shut down due to low demand and lockdown due to covid-19. The employment growth slowed down and there were huge pay cuts and job cuts in the labour market. In 2017, the growth rate in GDP in UK was 4.4% in the fourth quarter but it was due to global slowdown combined with Brexit and covid-19 fell to 1.5% in 2019 second quarter. The global slowdown also hit hard the charitable trusts in United Kingdom severely where more than 59% of the charities reported that they were impacted due to the economic downturn. Almost 62% of the charities stated that there was a fall in the income in the year 2019. It was due to public funding and support from the UK federal government that they were still able to sustain the low funding situation. Thus in such an turmoil situation The Save the Children Funds is trying their best to collaborate with the United Nations Organizations and World Health Organization in order to increase the funding income which has been slowed down in the recent years. The Save the Children funds charity organization reported that there will be an increase in the poor and middle income group households by 15% and will reach 672 million in 2019. By the end of 2020, it is expected that the number of poor children and households will rise by 86 million more. This was as per a survey conducted by UNICEF and The Save the Children Fund. Thus as stated in one of the report by (Baroness Tina Stowell & Lord Gus O’Donnell, 2019) that people have well understanding of the impact of recession on the manufacturing sector during the global recession and covid-19 situation and how it has affected the society but the impact on the charitable industry is much more complex. Measuring the impacts of the current economic situations on the charitable industry is of great importance as they broadly impact the social consistency, well being of the individual and the civic engagement. Therefore, it is essential for the United Kingdom federal government to urgently take action in order to reduce the number of children living below the poverty line which may rise to 672 million being hit by the crisis in 2020. Around two-third of these people are from the South Asian and Sub Saharan Africa. Thus, due to lower investment income growth for The Save the Children Fund, there has been a decrease in the flow of funding towards the poor household and children of the countries. The Save the Children Funds also reports that due to the global economic downturn combined with global pandemic there will be immediate loss of income where most of the families will be able to afford the basic amenities like food, water and clothing. They will also be detached from getting good healthcare facilities, basic education. As a result the girl child will be at the risk of getting married early, exploitation and abuse. Thus, there has been huge impact of the economy on this charitable organization, yet they are fighting hard to provide the poor children and the needy households with monetary and economic support as far as possible.
