PPMP20009 Project Management Methodologies Term 2, 2017 Page 1 of 3 Assessment 1 (Group Work - Presentation) Case study: Presentation Introduction Michael Chiozza, the chairman of a company with diversified interest in various industries including energy and power generation, information technology services and the mining sector expressed his disappointment at the executive staff meeting. “We are no longer competitive in the marketplace. Our project management methodology has not been revised and updated. We have customised some processes based upon the PMBOK® Guide and Prince2 almost seven years ago. Our competitors are getting well ahead of us. I have been asking for a common methodology to be developed for all our project domains more than a year now, and all I get are excuses. I simply cannot believe that my executive staff is afraid to develop a project management methodology. I want you to investigate and propose a methodology that we can adopt, a common one for all if possible, if not a specific methodology for each project domain.” Response The executive staffs quickly formed a team comprising a few experienced project managers from each project domain. You are leading this task force as instructed by Michael. You will need to deliver a presentation once the task force has agreed on the methodology (ies). You would have to analyse:  The lifecycle phases for the project domains  The appropriate policies and procedures that need to be considered  Standardization of policies, procedures, templates, checklists, guidelines based on project domains or client requirements (where possible)  The mechanism to share knowledge and capture lesson learned within and across project domains  The requirements for continued professional development for project team members and rest of the staffs. To make any project successful, a project manager should be well planned to meet all the requirements and its objectives like scope of the project, proper scheduling, budgeting and maintaining the quality. A “project success” can also be measured to make sure that our project is on track and it can be measured during, before or after the completion of project. It is also important that proper planning of a project and project foundation plays a key role in any project to meet the hierarchy of project management which ranges from labourers, contractors, supervisors, site engineers, managers and director generals. With all these factors and a proper execution of any project proves to give the concrete solution. Considering all the factors, project management professionalism can only be achieved by dedication, proper demonstration and with work discipline. Above this, use of qualitative and quantitative approach towards management, managing man power and material is the final aspect to meet professionalism in any project. During any project to get completed we also come across other factors like legislation, standards, framework, methodologies etc. In the starting face of any project we come across the legalisation which leads to legalising and following the law suit of the project, which makes us aware to the boundaries and its limits. If we work by the proper understanding of any project then the result will be automatically good whereas framework is mainly related to the main stream of the project and the project is also followed by the project guidelines which involves the step by step procedure. Methodologies are nothing but it involves the stakeholders to take necessary and important procedures to meet all the requirements which are required for any project accomplishment. It also important to mention that managing project also needs all the aspect such as design, planning, scheduling etc. on the other hand we can also say that, one who has a power of single resource can control the whole system as pre-project management and post project management were initiated. When it comes to project handling or any other assignment it is required to have strong leadership and governance which is not only limited to managing the people but also in undertaking the task associated. Project lifecycle is nothing but the proper implementation, which mainly focus on breaking down a task and to structure it. In order to validate the structure, project management methodologies are used to help project manager to understand the task that are associated to him. Continuous improvement is one of the main teachings in this subject, continuous improvement is defined as the consistently strike to improve your products or other services in order to meet the highest requirements. Managing chain in project management deals with the classification of chain which are responsible for the formation of complete structure with its each role defining its module ranging from human resource management, direction, engineering, forecasting and all the other activities which are related to project management. This course have given me the complete knowledge of project management methodologies and also tells us about the history and how it got evolved. It also teaches me how to apply it on different domains which have different lifecycles. It has also give me a brief knowledge on continuous improvement and chain management.
