How can the Australian Government encourage more people to use public transport in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment?
Answer – The increasing population, rapid urbanization, greater needs of transport, high energy utilization and more consumption of wood-burning appliances all have added t
o elevated levels of air pollution in Australia. Emissions from motor vehicles gives almost a quarter of the energy associated with greenhouse gases and has lead to major air pollution in the country, mainly in urban regions (Xia et al., 2015). Changes in climate is also directly linked with air pollution. Climate change in Australia is anticipated to impact the air quality in future. As compared to many other countries Australia is known to have good standards for air quality. In spite of this, approximately 5000 people die every year due to ill health caused due to air pollution in the country. Road transport is known to contributes significant amount of air pollution in cities and towns as well, leading to severe pollution problems such as carbon monoxide and smog. More and more use of private cars and road traffic is regarded as a main threat to contaminate the air quality in Australia. Fumes from vehicle contain dangerous chemicals that pollute the environment. Motor emissions also generate greenhouse gases that adds to global warming (Zhang et al 2013).
Greenhouse gas, such as carbon dioxide can trap extra heat from the sun within the earth’s atmosphere. This leads to ‘greenhouse effect’ and change in the climate. The main emission from motor vehicles in Australia is greenhouse gases, which causes global warming. In these vehicles, the major greenhouse gas emitted is carbon dioxide (CO2), they also generate the greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Though all vehicles do not show same kind of effect. The amount of CO2 emitted is associated to the quantity of fuel used by the vehicle and the kind of fuel used. In Australia the road transport segment highly relies on fuels based on petroleum. Increase in the road transport system in Australia has caused equivalent raise in number of transport using fuel, which as a result has causes amplified amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
In Australia, black carbon is released from vehicle, particularly diesel vehicles. Black carbon is also main reason to change climate as it raises the consequence of global warming in the environment. Eliminating black carbon from the environment is expected to have a important effect on diminishing the global warming effect (Williams et al., 2016)
Cars and trucks are chief cause of pollution and also the major cause of nitrogen dioxide. They are major source of ozone and petrochemical smog in capital cities in Australia. The threat of living near areas with heavy traffic and constant exposure to elevated levels of air pollution for incessant period of time is also known to be lethal. Nonstop exposure to diesel emissions is harmful and is also known to cause of cancer (Olsson et.al., 2011). Though air pollution is hazardous to everyone, it has...
