Research Proposal

Overview

The purpose of this assessment is to enable students to demonstrate a critical awareness of previous research in an IT context within a chosen topic area through a basic understanding of research theory and techniques. It requires clear communication of ideas in a professional manner so that the reader can easily understand the purpose and results of your research. Overall goals of this assignment are to help you to:

• Become more knowledgeable about finding and using varied research sources in your chosen area in IT.

• Further develop your critical thinking skills and back up your points with evidence.

• Become more adept at synthesizing information and developing informed views.

• Discipline yourself to follow a scholarly research format to document in-text sources and a references page (bibliography).

• Compose a well-organized, clear, concise, research proposal to expand your knowledge on a research question in your chosen area.

You can work on this report individually or in a group of two (maximum).

Assessment Details

Background

The research report provides a detailed description of a proposed research idea. It is similar to an essay and needs to be in a formal style with introduction, body and conclusion. In addition it requires a critical analysis and a coherent presentation.

Requirements

Each group is required to submit a mini research report (2500-3000 words excluding the title, abstract, table of contents and references/bibliography). The purpose of this task is to assist students to prepare and write a scholarly paper at an appropriate standard for this level of study.

You have already done quite a bit of work for this research in tutorials: you should have a tentative research issue, strategies and evidence to persuade your readers about the significance of the problem you’re researching, as well as the validity of your research issues. You also should consider opposing views or good counter-arguments that you can address in order to help establish your credibility and enhance the relevance of your paper.

A. Report Layout (20%)

The mini research report must contain the following sections, submitted in the order as listed below-

Title
– selection of an informative title

Abstract
- summarization of the significant concepts in the proposed study focusing on key aspects (300 words max)

Introduction
– outline of the thesis, problem, research question, etc. (stating the thesis/theory in terms of relationship among variables and examining the problem or investigating the question, or the like) and preview of the structure of the paper.

Literature Review- demonstration of the ability to find significant sources, familiarity with the existing body of knowledge, analysis of existing research, and learning through a careful reading of existing scholarship.

Methodology- procedures and processes undertaken in your investigation/study including the research design– study type, variables, and data collection methods (as applicable).

Discussion and implications of research –
Discuss with reasons whether your study needs Ethics clearance. Discuss findings that might occur and their potential impact on the field

References- include relevant literature sources (in-text citation and a list of fulltext references)

Appendices
(if applicable) - tables, graphs, charts or any other- related to the study not included in the main paper but referred to.

Note: Students are required to follow the ‘General guide to referencing’ and ‘Guide to Writing and Study Skills’- specially the ‘Layout and Appearance’ and the ‘Report’ sections.

Introduction
Background
The development of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has been a remarkable achievement in the history of human science and as well as Information Technology (IT). However, the necessity of creating the AI technology and its application has been a matter of debate, having equal response for and against the use of AI. The way AI technology imitates the human learning patterns; give it a very effective and accurate functional dynamics, however, there are areas of improvement, evidently observed. In the current research project, the impact of AI technology on the current educational system and the workforces has been discussed in details.
Research problem
The use of AI technology has been promoted as a human like learning and functioning technique without human errors and therefore, has been incorporated in educational organisations for students teaching, subject selection, question formulation and students’ merit evaluation. Taking cue from the situation, Grewal, Motyka and Levy (2018), stated that AI is making education more accurate and effective on one hand and on the other is losing the human appeal of learning, making the learning process lack innovation.
In case of assessing impact of AI on the workforces, the opinions are polarising. As identified by Furey and Martin (2019), the use of AI is also evident in the workplaces, positing higher productivity on one hand, while on the other hand, creating adverse impact on the scope of employability. Based on the identified aspect of the use of AI in education and in workforce, the problem tends to arise from the question whether AI should be used for betterment of education and workforce performance, or should not be used for maintaining human appeal and human based social perceptions.
Research Aim and Objectives
The aim of the current research is to assess the impact of AI on education and workforce. Based on the aim, the research objectives are framed and are mentioned below.
· To assess the necessity of using AI in Education and Workforce
· To assess the merits and de-merits of using AI in Education and Workforce
· To find ways to improve the use of AI in Education and Workforce
Literature Review
Artificial Intelligence
The development of AI technology has been based upon the remarkable processing engines developed on data algorithm frameworks. As stated by Kuleshov (2018), AI uses algorithms for predict results similar to other algorithm based systems, however, the use of human data in collective formats, processing them in minute details and the use of neural framework makes the AI system more complex and human like in its functioning. However, as argued by Agarwal (2018), AI, although being very advanced, is at the end of day an algorithm-based system, which makes it prone to error and vulnerable to manipulation.
Factors Effecting Artificial Intelligence
Firstly, the availability of Information Technology and internet are major factors of AI technology development. As mentioned by Hao et al. (2019), AI is based on data collection and processing, and while IT helps in the data processing for algorithm development the internet helps in the transmission of data from generic to specific databases, leading to accurate processing of relevant data. As identified by Bosch, Olsson and Crnkovic (2018), development of high speed computing hardware such as neural engines, microprocessors, modems and storage devices have helped in the development of AI technology. In addition, the development of cloud computing has also been a major contributors in the development of AI technology, as it has ensured the sharing of data via internet connected devices, offering the effectiveness functioning of the AI technology.
Modern Education Needs
Based on the increasing needs of vocational training and the reduction of theoretical and professional learning, along with the development of global citizenship lifestyle, the modern educational sector has transitioned from its usual pattern. As opined by Hoffmann-Longtin, Rossing and Weinstein (2018), the modern education has included the aspect of online learning, personalised course offering, long-distance education increasing frequencies. In order to make the educational offering more customisable, the degree of similarity reduction in terms of student or learners’ evaluation of merit, and to assess the potential of innovative approach without error, the use of AI has become necessary and is a very logical need in modern education.
Modern Workforce Needs
The modern workforce efficiency in propelling business organisations towards benefit are not reliant on employee performance and skill usage, but on the accuracy of work, in...
