1. Introduction
Businesses run through a collective collaboration among its various processes or operations. It would be essential to unde
rstand that operations manager is the backbone concerning the production of goods and services. Direct responsibilities of an operations manager include management of operations process, planning, performance improvement, embracing design along with operations strategy and much more. Moreover, implementation of right processes and other practices across the organisation could also be included under major responsibilities of operations manager.
This paper would discuss the importance of operations manager in the hospitality industry, especially in the restaurants, which are hospitality organisations, providing food and beverage service. Further, efforts will be made to present the specific roles and responsibilities of an operations manager with specific consideration to achievement of organisational goals. Likewise, this paper would present special consideration towards the role of operations manager in improving workplace operations, organisation of workflow, empowering team members, decision-making, problem solving and much more. This paper will conclude with a brief summary of its contents.
2. Nominated Industry and Expectations from Operations Manager
Restaurant, cafes or other food chains are all included under hospitality industry concerning a common aspect that is, customer service. Further, it would be essential to understand that hospitality industry functions or succeed majorly upon customer satisfaction. Therefore, customer satisfaction is one of the major responsibilities of operations manager and it could even be presented as a major expectation.
Hight, Gajjar and Okumus (2019) argued and mentioned that, operations manager in a restaurant or any other entity from hospitality industry is required to supervise as well as ensure the compliance with company or organisations standards. Likewise, it would be essential to consider the fact that sanitisation is a critical aspect in restaurants and operations manager are required to maintain optimal levels of sanitary procedures or ‘standard operating procedures’. Hutchings (2020) mentioned that customer and staff’s security and safety is non-negotiable concerning the services provided to the customers.
Therefore, operations manager is required to ensure compliance to all security procedures as well as design strategies concerning protection of all customers and employees. Designing and implementation of respective strategies would reduce the injuries to staff through preparation of accident reports. Management of daily roasters or a shift of employees working in the restaurant is also required by the operations manager. Thus, it is expected that all the employees would be optimally scheduled so that, processes and functioning of restaurant is not hampered.
Resolving complaints and conflicts from customers as well as among employees, respectively is another major function performed and expected from the operations manager. Provision of orientation and training programs for new and existing employees is also expected from the operations manager. Similarly, receiving customer feedback and preparing constructive strategies could also be presented as a major expectation from the operations manager of a restaurant, café or other entity in hospitality management industry.
3. Operation Manager’s Roles and Achievement of Organisational Goals
3.1 Improvements in Workplace Operations
In the context of examining the roles of operations manager, the organisational context sets forward some basic liabilities and improving the efficacy at work is enlisted at the top of it. In fact, some people might argue that professionals having managerial positions in organisations should be capacitive enough to bring in the desired changes. However, Wang and Chaudhry (2018) perceived that not all managerial positions, especially when tourism and hospitality sector is examined, are relatable to this argument.
In the hospitality sector, there is close alignment of workplace operations with opportunities to improve, as there is a wide range of consumers that approach restaurants. It is more such as becoming the part of the activities and services that are associated with the production of goods and services. A collective approach id anticipated on behalf of the operations manager to see the gaps in the production of services and their delivery so that the opportunities of the improvement of the same can be done.
