Introduction
Levi’s is a well known brand name in the apparel industry all across the globe. The brand has man
aged to create an iconic significance when it comes to buying denim products. Levi’s has been a classic brand for a period now. The ability of the brand to come up with world class quality products has clearly defined the true meaning and essence of the word brand. Levi’s has managed to create a fashionable image for its products in the market while retaining the uniqueness of its products along with the defining elements of rebellion and counter-culture. However, Levi’s has started to lose its presence from the market and the brand name has started to fade over a period despite its uniqueness and ubiquity. Through this project management plan efforts have been made to highlight the reasons behind the market failure of Levi’s in the recent times. Improvement measures have been suggested as well through project management skills using five stages of IPECC. These methods could turn out to be beneficial for turning the failure of Levi’s into success.
Major Reasons behind the Fading Brand Name of Levi’s from the Market
Levi’s ride on the path of success has been full of hurdles over the past few years adversely affecting the sales of this brand across the globe. After a lot of research and surveys it was concluded that sales of the brand decreased from US $ 7.9 billion in 1996 to US $ 4.3 billion in the year 2001. Despite of the popularity and brand image owned by Levi’s several problems have been identified, leading to the failure of the brand (Shabbir, Khan & Khan, 2017). One of the major mistake made by Levi’s was unplanned diversification of its products and clothing styles, which were presented to different market segments and thus received mix reactions from the people as one segment along with its sub-segment liked the products offered while others did not (Russel et al., 2019). Levi’s over ambitious business strategies formulated to cope up with the changing preferences and choices of the modern day customers and lead to loss of popularity and also profitability as the customer base started to shrink at a fast rate. The style experiments of the brand did not allow it to enjoy much success. The efforts made by Levi’s to branch out its business operations beyond its traditional boundaries and to come up with sub-brands like ‘Silvertab’ and other cheaper range of denim products did not turn out to be in favor of the company.
Another major factor contributing towards the failure of the brand are poor advertisement campaigns creating a confused and negative image for the brand in the market. The brand started to lose its connections with its valuable customers and the name of the brand started to fade because of the poor marketing and advertising strategies, which were not capable enough to hold back the customers. An advertisement campaign launched by Levi’s to promote its Silvertab range was one of the most hated campaigns in the advertising history. The viewers of the advertisement considered it to be insulting and the critics felt that the elements of good branding were missing in the advertisement. Another failure came to the way of Levi’s with its failed advertisement campaign in the year 2002 to promote its low-rise jeans. Moreover, Levi’s was not competent enough to withstand the competition from the existing players as well as the new entrants who were determined to attract and retain huge numbers of customers by providing them with best quality designer products at pocket friendly and affordable prices (Crowley & Jordan, 2017). Tommy Hilfiger, Diesel, Killer, CK are few names that turned out to be the biggest competitors of Levi’s. Therefore, it became difficult for the management of the company to preserve the brand name and integrity of the brand.
Moreover, unplanned business strategies created major troubles for Levi’s. Poor and uniformed decisions made by the management lead to continuously diminishing sales thus shrinking the profit margins of the business. Levi’s entered in an endless chase of being better than its competitors when it comes to...
