Information for Students ________________________________________________________________________________________ 1. Preamble Tensile testing of material is commonly used to select a material for an application, and to predict how a material will react under certain types of forces. The most important function of a tensile test is to provide design data, since it is essential to know the limiting (maximum) values that a structure can withstand without failure. The design properties that are measured with a tensile test are ultimate strength, yield strength, and Young’s Modulus. On a stress vs. strain curve (Figure 1), the y-axis can be considered as the force applied to the material, and the x-axis can be considered the deformation of the material. The Young’s Modulus can be determined by calculating the slope (gradient) of the linear portion of the curve. This determines the stiffness or strength of the material. 2. The task Your team (no more than 3 members) of engineers has been hired by VU College Pty Ltd to evaluate and determine the correct material to build a pedestrian bridge across the Yarra River in Melbourne’s CBD. The strength of the bridge must exceed 9kN/m to be classified as a safe working bridge. You are required to use Matlab programming to evaluate the data and report your findings. You will be given several sets of material data (4 alloys and 4 concretes) to analyse and make your recommendations for the safest and strongest material to use to design the bridge. 3. Deliverables and assessment 1. Written report (20 marks). Your findings are to be presented in a report (one report for each team) that is laid-out as follows: a. An introduction of the problem b. Methodology (how will you assess the strength of the material?) c. A detailed description of your computer tool and analysis (programming in Matlab (i.e. use green comments besides each line of code)) d. Results with a discussion in relation to the data analysis e. Conclusion including recommendations on the material selection for the bridge. This is to be completed and submitted to the VU Collaborate Dropbox for MATLAB Project before 5:00 pm on Wednesday 24th June 2020. 2. MATLAB .m file or .mlx file (20 marks). You need to also upload the code that you have developed with the extension of either .m or .mlx. In your MATLAB program, you need to upload and analyse the force – deflection relationship (stiffness) of engineering materials (sample data available on VUC): • Load force – deflection data • Generate fully-labelled plot • Apply data extraction • Calculate stiffness (straight line of best fit) • Calculate maximum load • Display stiffness and max load Remember to use adequate and appropriate comments throughout your code to make it understandable to the reader. 4.
