Effective writing techniques The first sentence of this paragraph is an excellent example of a ‘topic sentence’. We read this sentence and can quickly tell what the paragraph will be about. Secondly, ethnic residential concentration lends itself to provision of services. Dunn (1998) notes how the ethnic concentration serves as an advantage, as it makes the provision of ‘Indo-Chinese-specific services’ economically viable for government and non-government agencies (p.518). Figure 2 shows Fairfield Migrant Resource Centre in Cabramatta, which is justified because high ethnic residential concentration makes the location of the Centre both effective and strategic. This paragraph has a good structure: a point is made (in the topic sentence); it is then explained (sentence 2), and an example is given (sentence 3). Another good feature is the use of a scholarly source to support the argument. This makes the argument stronger. In this essay all arguments must be supported by scholarly readings. Figure 2. Cabramatta Community Centre, looking west on Railway Parade, Cabramatta, 5 October 2010. Cabramatta Community Centre contains Fairfield Migrant Resource Centre, which reflects the high presence of migrants in the Fairfield Local Government Area and especially around Cabramatta, where this centre is located. Thirdly, ethnic-specific businesses are economically viable, not so much to residential concentration, but rather, ‘activity-space concentration’ (Dunn 1998, p.420). Cabramatta has been described as ‘the regional centre’ (interview transcript, 1998 as cited in Dunn, 1998, p. 520) of the Indo-Chinese community within Sydney. In the estimate of Dunn (1993), This author has chosen to ‘signpost’ the different parts of their argument by using numbers (Second, Third etc) in the body of the essay. Techniques like this can help to structure your essay and make your key points stand out. How else might you signpost your argument? Page 2
