While one can definitely use a competency framework to evaluate leader(s) and other personalities like
Mr. Steve Jobs, Leadership is quite a co
mplex subject to capture so easily and there are several
reservations amongst the academic community about standardizing a framework(s) to fully capture the
essence on the qualities and traits of successful leaders.
I will try to cite a couple of examples of competency frameworks which may be used in some which way
to capture such eccentric leaders whose brilliance can't be fully captured yet at least try to capture the
patterns therein.
- McGregor's Theory X & Theory Y (1960, p. 25) captured two different sets of assumptions by
managers
- John Adair's Action Centred leadership Model (1973, p. 215) wherein he postulated that such a
leader gets things done for him through his teams
- Katzenbach & Smith (1994, p. 110) encapsulated certain key behaviors of Leaders when he/she
follows other leaders before him/her
- Bass & Avolio (1994, p. 411) gave a model of transformational Leadership Styles and the
associated behaviors
- Hooper & Potter (1997, p. 52) gave seven key competences of transformational leaders
Having referenced the competency frameworks as above, I firmly believe that though one can't
completely map the leadership and the human brilliance, the frameworks can help in bringing a
scientific method to the madness. So while one can't simply clone the human intelligence (HI) where
