Individual Report – Coursework Brief Design and Construction: Principles, Application and Management Module Code: 7CNMN001W You need to provide a report (Max 2500* words plus or minus 10%) addressing part A and part B below. *The graphs, figures, tables, cover page, table of contents and list of references are not included in the word count Part A The client, an experienced contractor specialised in building hospitals, wants to become a “Design and Build Company” specialising in designing and building modern hospitals incorporating innovative design features in response to specific requirements of the clinical briefs and the construction process. As such, the client has decided to form an in-house integrated design team. The client has limited experience of modern design management and has instructed you to produce a critical report advising on: • A list of integrated design team’s capabilities and skills required. • Available methodologies (and their benefits and limitations) to effectively manage, plan, monitor and control the activities at design and construction stage • Including but not limited to Critical Path Method, ADePT Methodology for planning and design, Earned Value Management, Value Engineering, Life Cycle Cost Analysis/Assessment (LCCA/LCA), etc. • How BIM principles can be incorporated and would provide support into design and construction management of such complex projects • A list of available software and technologies that can facilitate the above – with a brief and clear explanation of their capabilities and limitations (if any). Part B The client has asked you, as the proprietor of a Design and Build Company, to design and build a three storey, five bedroom residential building. The client wish to satisfy themselves of your managerial ability and wish for you to demonstrate how well you can plan the actual carrying out of the work and has asked you to identify significant activities in the pre-construction and construction phases, and your programme of works to deliver this project. Part B should include • General organisational chart for design and build of this project • Work breakdown structure • A responsibility assignment matrix • Programme of work – (Microsoft Project; produce Bar Chart showing Critical Path, Start and End Dates, any Milestone dates, etc. It is expected that each activity is appropriately resourced). • Identification of project risks with relation to the critical path, and strategies adopted to eliminate, mitigate, or manage the same - Explain how you will monitor/control the proposed plan of work to minimise delay. The following points should also be used as guidance: • Direct speech including writing in the first, second person (e.g., I, we, you etc.) is inappropriate for academic/research reports and must be strictly avoided. • Short and clear sentences must be preferred • All abbreviations must be explained. • Use diagrams and sketches as much as possible. They should be placed in appropriate place. A diagram or sketch says a thousand words. So use them. • All figures/illustrations/tables need to be numbered must have appropriate captions and their source must be cited. • Consult Plagiarism guidelines • Citations (references) in the main report and the list of references presented at the end of the report must be in line with the Harvard Referencing System
