Physical Activity: Components of School Based Interventions
Schools have a distinct potential to assist children in achieving the globally mandated one hour or more of moderate-to-intense physical activity each day. Daily physical activity during adolescence and childhood is critical for promoting lifetime wellness and health and minimizing a range of health issues. School-based physical activity interventions may include initiatives to improve physical education, provide regular recess, incorporate physical exercise into traditional classroom sessions, as well as provide after and before school programs (Jones et al., 2020).
Physical education and focused physical activity programs are critical components of a school-based intervention to enhance physical activity. Physical education consists of cognitive content as well as training aimed at developing knowledge, behaviors, and motor skills for fitness and physical activity. Assisting schools in establishing regular physical education may offer children the confidence and capacity to be physically active for the rest of their lives. All children, irrespective of ability, must engage in at least one hour of regular physical activity. By delivering an equitable opportunity for children with impairments, schools can assist all children in meeting this objective (The Community Guide, n.d.).
