Introduction to the Organisation
Ioneer is one of the top 10 sustainable companies in Australia, which have sustainable future. They have people from mining industries who thrive for future of people and environment. Earlier Ioneer was known as Global Geoscience Ltd. The then Managing Director Bernard Rowe is counted as one of the founding members of the company introduced a lithium-boron project in 2016. Rhyolite Ridge mineralogy was one of the aspect, which is different from sedimentary lithium deposits and is considered as one of the low cost lithium source (Ioneer, 2021). Company secured ownership in 2017 and in 2018, it became Ioneer to reflect its changed commitment and focus for a sustainable future.
i. Functions of the Organisation
The word Ioneer is derived from two words ion and pioneer. It means that company aims to be pioneers in producing mining materials for a sustainable future (Ioneer, 2021). It belongs to metal mining industry and James Calaway is Executive Chairman in the Board since 2020. Bernard Rowe holds position of Managing Director and popularly known as a brain behind acquiring lesser-known lithium-boron deposit in southern Nevada – later to be renamed Rhyolite Ridge (Ioneer, 2021). Ioneer carrier on mining and processing functions:
Mining:
Development of Rhyolite Ridge takes place in two stages:
Quarry Stage 1-Starter Pit: Initial starter pit for 4.5 years where lithium grade are higher by 15%
Quarry Stage 2: After taking environmental permission from due authorities greater pit will be developed (Ioneer, 2021).
Current mining advances will be applied to enhance the project performance:
Haul Truck Automation: It is first Greenfield in US to use haul truck automation technology to lower the capital and operating costs
Mining Selectivity: Use of technology such as high precision GPS, accurate geological model, Fleet Management Systems (FMS) and competent operators will reduce the loss and dilution during mining (Ioneer, 2021)
Processing:
With zero carbon dioxide, the lithium and boron products are produced resulting in low greenhouse emission during processing. Water usage is also minimum as compared to other methods used by lithium producers such as solar evaporation methodology and brine extraction (Ioneer, 2021). The processing plant seven phases such as ore sizing, vat leaching, Boric acid circuit, Evaporation and Crystallisation circuit, Lithium carbonate circuit, sulphuric acid plant and lithium hydroxide circuit.
ii. Rationale for Sustainability Strategy and Potential Results
Sustainability has become a mandate for the corporations because all over the world the customer perspectives are changing. Is has become an essential practice to deal with gaps between knowing and embracing sustainable business practices (Forbes, 2021). Sustainability is important because at present, many companies have strategy design for it but only fewer of them got success in implementation. This is due to the fact the engagement is not clearly defines. Sustainability strategy not only projects the company as a hero but also help it to advertise its business and earn profits.
