Read Chapter 8 in Harrison. Pay close attention to the history of political parties and the functions of political parties. Focus on these Key Terms on page 270-271: grassroots organizing, New Deal, primary election, Tea Party movement. Go to www.presidency.ucsb.edu/platforms.php and think about how you would assess this web-site. Is it good? Why or why not?
Focus especially on the section entitled “Political Parties in US History.” Look at how party politics has evolved.
Look at how certain political parties have dominated at certain times. Think about why.
As you read the chapter, I want you to think in terms of the context of this year’s Presidential election. What do you think is likely to happen?
Think about the following question: --How were you socialized to the two-party system? Do your views reflects your parents' (or other family members') views? Were third parties even mentioned at home when you were growing up? (Feel free to think about politics in your home country if you weren't raised in the United States).
