The Only 46 Words of Health Advice You'll Ever Need In no particular order: · Avoid trans fats. · Substitute unsaturated fats for saturated if you can. · Cook from fresh whole ingredients. · Minimize restaurants and ultra-processed foods. · Cultivate friendships. · Don't smoke. · Nurture sleep. · Drink alcohol at most moderately. · Exercise as often as you can enjoy · Only drink those calories that you love Comparatively, everything else is minutia. Choose the tip from the above list the interests you the most. Write your choice here: ___________________________________________________________ Now you’re going to research the tip you chose, with the goal of finding evidence that supports or contradicts it. You need to find at least three sites that relate to your topic, although you may not end up quoting from all of them. Write down the information about each website. To do this in the Modern Languages Association (MLA) method which is required for an English course, gather as much of the following information as you can find: URL, Website title, Author, Publication Title, and Website Publisher. The image below will show you where to look for this information: 4. For each of the three articles that you find, write down the important information. Note that sometimes the information is not provided, so just write NP in that case. FIRST ARTICLE URL _____________________________________ Website title ____________________________________________________________ Author ___________________________________ Publication Title ___________________________________ Website Publisher ___________________________________ SECOND ARTICLE URL _____________________________________ Website title ____________________________________________________________ Author ___________________________________ Publication Title ___________________________________ Website Publisher ___________________________________ THIRD ARTICLE URL _____________________________________ Website title ____________________________________________________________ Author ___________________________________ Publication Title ___________________________________ Website Publisher ___________________________________ You will be writing a paragraph on the subject that you have been researching. It should begin with an introductory sentence that outlines your position. Next there should be several supporting arguments that defend your point. Refer to at least one of your sources, making sure to give the source credit by putting the author’s last name or the website in brackets following the sentence that refers to or quotes from it. Finally, conclude by restating you main idea. Here is an example of how to include a source in your paragraph: It seems that diets don’t work for most people. One recent study shows that “eighty percent of people who lose weight from dieting regain it (“Why so May People Regain Weight after losing it”). 4. Write the rough copy of your paragraph here: ____________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ To edit your rough copy, use the method that you find the most helpful. Read it out loud. Check your teacher’s edit sheet. Ask a friend or family member to look it over. Do make sure that you are doing something to produce your best work. 5. Write the good copy of your paragraph here: ____________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Any time you use information from outside sources (written by anyone but you), you must prepare a Works Cited list to give credit to the authors. Don’t forget to refer to list the Weighty Matters website as one of your sources. When you list items in a Works Cited list, you write the details in the following order: Author’s last name, Author’s first name, the title of the publication in quotation marks, the website name in italics, the publisher, and the posting date. Finally, list the date you accessed the site. If any of this information is missing from the website, just leave it out. When you write each entry in your list, you don’t indent the first line of an entry, but you do indent each line that follows. If you want an easier way to cite your sources, go to Bib.me or Citation Machine, type in the name of the article you are using, and it will automatically provide you with the information in MLA formatting. You just cut and paste the results onto your Works Cited list. 6. Now it’s time to list all your sources: Works Cited ____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ LESSON 16--ENG 4C The Media The media has its own precise vocabulary.
