The Atlantic Slave Trade
Around the 15th century, Africa was found to develop a relationship with Europe, which resulted in devastation as well as depopulation in Africa. However, it resulted in an increase in development and wealth in Europe. According to Barclay (2017), in the 19th century, the Europeans started initiating trade with the African captives. Initially, the trafficking of the humans existed only in Europe where the Europeans used to enslave each other. Eventually, slaves from the Middle East, Africa and different other parts of the world started reaching Europe. The transatlantic trade of slaves contributes to the global trading of slaves who were transported across the Atlantic Ocean. The number of African who were deported as slaves varied from 10 million to 12 million.
As per Forman (2018), they were mostly sent to the Americas in between 16th to 19th century the slave trade was known to be the second of the three trades that were shipped from Europe. This constituted the triangular trade where wine, arms and textiles were shipped to Africa from Europe and slaves were sent to the Americas from Africa. While coffee and sugar were exported to Europe from the Americas. As per Kelly (2018), in the years around the 1480s, Portuguese trade ships were transporting African slaves to Cape Verde as well as Madeira Island where they were used in the sugar plantation. Further, the Spanish conquistadors traded slaves from Africa to the Caribbean islands in the year 1502. However, as per history, the Portuguese merchants were observed to have dominated the slave trade in across Atlantic.
These Portuguese merchants mostly operated along the African coastline in the Congo-Angola section of Africa. The concept of the slave trade became a part of Africa by the year 1600s. This was initiated by the Dutch, which was followed by the French and English merchants. The English traders and the French merchants were known to control the transatlantic trade of the slaves. These merchants used to transport African slaves to the Niger and Senegal rivers. By the 17th century, the demand for slaves increased radically all around the world.
