Given the divisive nature of our current political discourse, it is a good time to explore some of the collective American political psychology that has kept WE the people from devolving into civil war for a second time. What is it about our dual existence as an individual liberty-loving people who cohere around a lofty and hopeful promise of "....a more perfect union" that keeps us from breaking apart? In order to better understand that, WE need to dig deeper into where WE came from, who WE are today and where WE are going. This week, you will need to read and we be discussing / analyzing the article below by Yale Law professors, Amy Chua and Jeb Rubenfeld entitled "The Threat of Political Tribalism", which appeared in the Atlantic magazine in October 2018. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/10/the-threat-of-tribalism/568342/ (Links to an external site.) Once you have read this piece, consider that among other issues, Chua and Rubenfeld highlight, not only, America's many challenges, they focus on a need for modern America to "unite under a common banner of ideas" due to a long history of succumbing to fear in the form of racism, sexism and many other "isms" that keep us from seeking and strengthening our ties that bind us to core democratic beliefs. Below, please state your understanding of the authors' definition of and thesis on tribalism, their specific problems with the "left" and "right" and their suggested remedy to such problems. Lastly, do you agree with their suggested remedies - why or why not? Please use specific examples from the article to support your position(s) - 15 pts.
