Introduction
Child development refers to the psychological, biological, as well as, emotional transitions that take place in humans between their birth and the end of their adolescence. The progression of child development relies on the guidance that is provided to them by their peers, parents and the community (Tanrikulu & Campbell, 2015). In this assignment, the manners in which child development is affected and constricted by cyber bullying and its effects have been discussed and analysed.
Issues and Supporting Theories
The practice of cyber bullying has emerged from the widely increasing acceptability and usability of smart devices and the Internet among the young people. Bullying refers to a social issue that may be defined to be an imbalance of power that is characterised by people’s intention to hurt others in a repetitive manner (Tanrikulu & Campbell, 2015). Cyber bullying, on the other hand, can be referred to as the misuse of technology such as smart devices, social media and the internet in order to embarrass, target and threat individuals.
The occurrence of cyber bullying is high among the young population. Any form of bullying significantly affects the confidence among children and contributes to the reduction of their self-esteem levels. Both of these characteristics are of paramount importance in terms of facilitating the potential of individuals to develop best behaviours and succeed. In addition to that, bullying also contributes to emotional disjoints which makes it difficult for the victims to engage with other people within the society.
Being subjected to bullying causes victims to lose their innate courage. Additionally, it decreases their confidence and motivation levels in terms of engaging into social relationships. The effects of bullying consequently lead to the formation of a weak character and shyness as their attributes are significantly hampered through bullying. The victims also tend to develop feelings of loneliness and become introverts or feel isolated within the society. In this context, it has been argued by scholars that peers and parents play important roles in the development of children. In the context of cyber bullying, the roles that are taken by young people can be significantly influenced by their parents or their peers.
According to the Bronfenbrenner theory, the concept of bullying is embedded within schools, communities, neighbourhoods, peer groups, families among others which necessitate the development of intervention and prevention strategies within the same ecologies (Tanrikulu & Campbell, 2015). As per the theory of social cognition, the attributions or beliefs that are perceived by individuals to be the contributing factors to the occurrence of events shape the manner in which these individuals respond to others.
According to that social cognition theory, it is common for some individuals to develop beliefs that revolve around self-blame whereas some individuals may develop hostile belief bias, which leads them to perceive hostile behaviour from others within ambivalent contexts that leads to aggressive responses (Ey, Taddeo & Spears, 2015).
Rationale
As educators provide guidance to endorse the development of children in primary schools, it is of paramount importance for the educators to comprehend these issues in order to ensure the provision of appropriate guidance that would meet the necessities and requirements of...
