MERCANTILISM
Mercantilism was an economic "system" that developed in Europe during the rule of the new monarchs (about 1500) and peaked with the advent of absolutist powers (around 1600–1700). Mercantilism was not defined by
a passionate devotion to a single, well-defined economic thesis. Rather, its supporters accepted, to varying degrees, aspects of a set of generally held theoretical ideas or inclinations best suited to the requirements of a given age and state. The fundamental ideas of mercantilism were 1. the belief that the amount of wealth in the world is essentially constant, and 2. belief that a national wealth is best measured by the number of valuable metals or ingots it holds; 3. a need to stimulate exports rather than imports in order to achieve a favorable foreign balance of trade that allows the receipt of such metals; 4. the assumption that the crown or state should play a prominent role in assisting and guiding the regional and global economies to achieve these goals; and 5. valuation of a large population as the key to self-sufficiency and power of government.

He produced several writings, the majority of which were condemned by the Inquisition due to the author's apparent sympathy for Calvinist ideas. Many elements of his life are unknown, and historians...
