Dissertation title: History of racism in the UK and the consequences of it people face today.
This is the information I submitted to my university about my dissertation.
The aim of the research is to analyze if and in what ways people in the UK today still experience discrimination. I want to know if people feel discriminated in their workplace, university or simply while walking down the street. Discrimination has always existed in some form and I want to know if it still exists in the modern world in the UK. I define racism as discrimination against minority groups based on their ethnicity. My main focus will be on black and Muslim people in London. I will discuss issues such as choosing white workers/students over others.
The research will include a questionnaire in a form of an online survey. I will design a survey which will ask participants of what their personal experience of discrimination has been like living in the UK. The survey will consist of multiple answers questions as well as open ended questions where participants can elaborate their answers in more detail. I will then analyze the data, comparing it with my expectations. I will compare the responses, finding commonalities and differences in peoples experiences. First I will get familiar with the data and then I will use coding to develop a framework. I will identify broad ideas, concepts, behaviors, or phrases and assigns codes to them. Then I will identify themes looking for commonalities and differences in responses. I will look for the most common experience and identify patterns which will help me to better understand peoples experiences of discrimination
a. I will be obtaining consent b. I will be giving the consent form to the participants before asking them to complete the survey c. They will receive the participant information sheet at the very beginning d. They will have as much time as they need but not longer than a few days I will first approach and brief people in person and then redirect them to the online form.
Research questions:
· Who were the main target of discrimination in the UK and why?
· Do those people still experience discrimination in any form in the UK today?
Research method: Online survey
