WorldCat Database
The WorldCat can be defined as a union catalogue which stores different items of the collection of 17,900 libraries across 123 countries
and territories which participate in the OCLC. The OCLC is a global corporative and it operates the WorldCat. There are different subscribing member libraries which maintain the database of the WorldCat which is the largest bibliographic database among the world. The OCLC provides the WorldCat to the libraries without any cost but the catalogue can be used as the foundation for other services of the OCLC which are subscripted (Vaughan, J).
These services include collection management and sharing of the resources. This database can be used by the general public and the librarians who needs data for research work. The OCLC was founded in 1967 by the Fred Kilgour as a leader. In the same year they started to develop the union catalogue technology which was later known as the WorldCat and in 1971 first catalogue records were added in it. It started a pilot program which was known as open WorldCat in 2003. In this program they made abbreviated with cards from the subset of the libraries which were available for the partner websites and booksellers. This program helps them to increase the Accessibility to the collections for their subscribing members (McClure, J. Z).
The technical staff of the OCLC started a wiki project in October 2005 which allowed the readers to add find structured field information and the commentary which was related with the record present in WorldCat....
