What is one thing that came to mind when you read the film study or the synopsis of Iron Jawed Angels?
The first thing that came to mind when I read the film study and synopsis of Iron Jawed Angels was gratitude and the next thing that came to mind was shame. I don’t usually like to disclose much personal information about myself in class assignments because, well, I don’t know my classmates like that. However, this assignment is different. I have a confession to make that I am not proud of. There have been a few times since I became of voting age that I did not vote. It was when I was much younger, and I did not do my research on the candidates, so I did not feel informed enough to cast my vote. Now, when I read stories such as these, I feel ashamed that I did not make a greater effort.
Name one woman in History that stood out for women's rights?
Alice Paul
Why did this woman come to mind when asked that question?
There were so many women who demonstrated such determination, relentlessness, and courage throughout history that it was difficult to select just one. Women of great fortitude like Coretta Scott King, Eleanor Roosevelt, Dorothy Day, Ruth Bader Ginsburg to name a mere few. It was too difficult to select only one woman in history that stood out, so I decided on Alice Paul because she was one of the subjects of the film study and synopsis.
According to the assigned reading, Alice Paul joins a picket line where she was attacked by a mob then imprisoned. While in prison she went on a hunger strike. That is where I would be out. I get incredibly disagreeable if I have gone more than 4 hours between meals. Not only did she go on a hunger strike, but she led other suffragettes on a hunger strike as well. I don’t need to continue with the recap since everyone read the same material that I did. Alice Paul was not perfect and I may not agree with some of her tactics but she, like many suffragettes, stood by her convictions and others followed. The bottom line is that there have been amazing women throughout history who have performed extraordinary feats and I need to do better.

- What is one thing that came to mind when you read the film study or the synopsis of Iron Jawed Angels? I had not ever heard the term "Iron jawed angles" before reading this, it obviously is about their hunger strike. These women were willing to do anything including personal sacrifice for voting rights. Alice Paul and Lucy Burns seem like the extra spark the women's suffrage movement needed to speed things up. It is very interesting to see that Carrie Chapman Catt and Anna Howard Shaw wanted the same results for voting rights but were against the methods of Paul and Burns.
- Name one woman in History that stood out for women's rights? Susan B. Anthony stands out for me when asked about women's rights, she fought to abolish slavery and for the right to vote. Anthony is one of the most well known activists in American history.
- Why did this woman come to mind when asked that question? Susan B, Anthony comes to mind when women's rights comes up because she is highly recognized for dedicating her life to the women's suffrage movement. Susan B. Anthony and Elisabeth Stanton founded Temperance activities, Women's Loyal National League, National Women's suffrage Association and much more. Anthony dedicated her life starting as a teenager to the equal rights movement.
