Module 5 Discussion- Motivation for Managers and Leaders

The referenced TED talk we will show our clients is 9 minutes long and is a wealth of valuable research on the topic of leadership, more specifically, great leadership. Roselinde Torres has spent much of her career pursuing answers to her question “what does it take to be a great leader?” Based on this video, I have written some notes on how we will lead a conversation with our new client, there are some great key points that we can use to help them with their goal of motivating their employees.

How We Can Use This Video to Help Our Client

The first point I think would be beneficial to bring up, is the idea of changing the image of what their employees view as their role in the company. Are they viewing their employees and simply human capital, there to get the job done, or like Roselinde Torres said in her speech, are they viewing them as future leaders (TED, 2014)? This draws a parallel with the McClelland theory of acquired needs that states achievement, power, and affiliation are strong motivating factors in employees (Kinicki, 2022). Employees have a need to be more than just a worker; they need to have close relationships, to achieve and employees have a need to be responsible over others.

I would also like to add in our discussion the ideas that Roselinde Torres brings up regarding changing some of the programs that are used in traditional management styles. Ms. Torres points out that great leaders are able to try new things and dare to be different, if their current programs are not working, we should encourage them to make changes (TED, 2014).

Cons of This Video and Items We Will Need to Add to This Discussion

The first thing we will need to be able to add to the discussion regarding motivation is tangible directives. This video did have some great quotes and some great starting ideas for changing perceptions of management and leadership; it was very short on tangible ideas that can be implemented to create a change in culture. Ideas to include would be both monetary and non-monetary incentives, and also discussing if the attitude of gratitude is present in their workplace, as research shows that people need to receive recognition and appreciation for the contributions they make (Kinicki, 2022). The second con of this video is that it did not take into account the limitations most managers face. We have to work with our new client in creating various intrinsic and extrinsic incentives that they can realistically offer.

Am I Daring To Be Different?

This video allows for self-reflection and had me question “how am I daring to be different?” I do believe that I am daring to be different as my openness to new experiences is high. I view our team as a part of a learning organization that actively creates, acquires, and transfers knowledge within itself, modifying behavior to reflect new knowledge (Kinicki 2022).

In response to the second question of the post, it was mentioned that employees carry the
image of a company. I strongly believe that statement because if employees are not satisfied, then they will leave the company, and potential employees would not like to join the company. The discussion post also stated that achievement, power, and affiliation have a strong impact on employees’ motivation. I completely agree...
