The life of a human isn’t more worthy than dollars anymore. Whether this is due to capitalism fundamentally
or due to the greed of individual humans is hard to say. However, it is definitely something that needs to be paid more attention to and fixed if possible. This is clearly demonstrated in the case of Theranos, a multi-million-dollar bio-tech company that had a saga lasting 15 years during which it indulged in lab testing that was never really proven to show accurate results. The harm caused to thousands of humans as a result remains unknown.
Theranos was the brain-child of Elizabeth Holmes who raised millions of dollars with a big vision of performing multiple tests using a very small amount of blood. The company started in 2003 when Holmes dropped out of school. The company continued to grow year after year with an initial investment of $6 million. It went on to form partnerships with big names such as Walgreens and Safeway and even opened clinics and labs. Starting from its first technology, Theranos 1.0, Theranos also produced a minilab. In 2015, news about Theranos’ unethical and harmful practices started to get out. Gradually, the partnerships dissolved and lawsuits were filed against the company by patients and companies alike. The company still remains under investigation by Department of Justice and may lead to criminal charges against Holmes.
