  • Review other students' posts before deciding what and where to structure reply posts. Students must post a minimum of 2 replies thatmust be uniqueto other students.Replies should build upon the original discussion thread (and other replies posted prior) with further details on lesson concepts, additional research, business examples, etc.

  • Replies require short essays and must contain a minimum of 100 words each. Replies must be constructive which means they do not simply state agreement or disagreement re-highlighting points already made in prior posts. Replies must offer additional information or input to the discussion and lesson concepts.

As a result of the outbreak and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, businesses are scrambling to find suppliers for their products as factories and ports were shut down. Products are in short supply, which has driven up prices and sped up global inflation. Late in August, factories in China were once again closed; this is common in a nation that has enacted sporadic lockdowns to combat the coronavirus. However, the pandemic was not to blame this time. Instead, a record-breaking drought damaged the economy in southwest China, stopping global supply chains for goods like electronics, cars, and other items that had been regularly interrupted during the previous three years (Swanson, Bradsher 2022).

Products are in short supply, which has driven up prices and sped up global inflation. Economists and trade experts caution that as climate change and the accompanying extreme weather events continue to disrupt the world's supply chain for goods in highly unpredictable ways, these problems could soon become more common for businesses that source parts and products from around the world.

The southwestern China drought has also had an impact on enterprises around the world. It significantly decreased hydropower generation in the area, necessitating factory power outages and disrupting the supply chains for electronics, auto parts, and other commodities
(Swanson, Bradsher 2022)
. Volkswagen, Toyota, Foxconn, a company that makes electronics, and CATL, a company that makes batteries for electric cars, all reduced production at nearby factories. While food importers in China looked for additional trucks and trains to transport their cargo into the interior of the country, businesses had to race to acquire trucks to transport their products to Chinese ports. In southwest China, the heat and dryness have caused many vegetables to wilt, virtually tripling in price. They have also made it difficult for the remaining pigs and fowl to gain weight, which has increased the price of meat. Recent rainfall made it possible for homes and businesses in western China to briefly regain power. However, the drought continues to affect a large portion of central and western China, and reservoir levels are still only one-third of normal.

The obvious possible solutions are to find ways to reduce or mitigate climate disaster. China's people and government can take steps to boost renewable energy production and other decarbonization initiatives, promising to reach peak emissions with a drop-off and achieve carbon neutrality by enacting more forceful laws and regulations.

Climate change could worsen supply chain turmoil

Over the past three years, businesses in China and its international supply chain haven been suffering as a result of a drought in the southwest, forcing business to shut down and disturbing trade of the country’s automobiles, electronics, and its other goods. According to Ana Swanson and Keith Bradsher ofThe New York Times, the drought has “drastically reduced hydropower production,” which caused a drawback on the production of things like car parts and electronics from business such as Toyota, Volkswagen, CATL, and Foxconn (2022, paragraph 7). Not only was China’s industrial companies affected, but its agriculture was reduced to wilted fruits and vegetables, and feeding their livestock became more difficult. This resulted in an increase in price for their produce and meat. Swanson and Bradsher also mentioned that without a sufficient supply of water, the power plants in China have nothing to keep them from overheating. Ye Zhanhang ofSixth Tonegoes a little more in depth about how bad the drought truly is, stating that “Chongqing’s counties and districts have reported water storage levels 30% lower than a key safety benchmark” (paragraph 3), and that “officials said that 51 rivers and 24 reservoirs in Chongqing municipality have run out of water,” leaving rural residents with a dangerously low supply of water (paragraph 10).

In the second half of their article, Swanson and Bradsher discuss the possible solutions that countries might consider to help offset this new supply chain risk, such as setting up factories in other countries not as heavily affected by climate at the time, or turning to countries that can produce more crops even with temperatures rising (i.e., Russia, Scandinavia, and Canada). However, the authors go on to point out the issues with these solutions, the main issue being increased prices to the consumers. With such a small supply of resources on hand due to climate changes, some countries will resort to “protectionist policies” in which the countries will either slow or halt exports in order to feed their people. Doing so, however, will only result in international shortages and higher prices on food, which will make the issue worse. (2022, paragraph 25). Others also suggested to keep trade as it is, or to increase trade in order to help resolve the issue, or at least keep it from getting worse. Of the options listed in the article, perhaps going with the latter would be the best option to help resort the issue. Increasing trade would help China with its economic issues, which would allow them focus more of their time on coming up with solutions to help resolve the issues caused by poor climate. Raising prices would only have a negative impact on China’s economy, businesses, and its citizens, which most likely wouldn’t sit very well with them considering they have awatershortage.
