Introduction
Healthcare is an ever-changing industry and it is highly dependent upon the changing needs of customers. It would be essential to understand that nursing roles and responsibilities change with the changing demands of customers. The report presented by Institute of Medicine (IOM) reflects the future of nursing including leading change and advancement in healthcare through the examination of workforce.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has presented with significant contributions towards the improvements in nursing profession in order to address the common challenges. This paper would discuss the work of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) along with four key messages presented by the IOM report. Further, efforts would be made to present the role of state based coalitions in advancing the goals specified in IOM report. Likewise, this paper would conclude with barriers to advancement, which exists currently in state along with nursing advocacy to overcome these barriers.
1. Work of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative Leading to IOM Report
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is one of the largest philanthropy in United States, which focuses mainly upon health. One of the major goal of this foundation is to improve the health and healthcare of all the Americans using grants. It would be essential to understand that Robert Wood Johnson Foundation announced initiative in order to support the efforts of states in transforming healthcare through nursing. RWJF announced a package of $3 million to help the states in preparing nursing profession to address some of the prominent healthcare challenges, accessing the quality as well as cost of healthcare (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2013).
‘Future of Nursing State Implementation Program’ has been reported to bolster the efforts, which might already be underway in 50 states of U.S along with District of Columbia. Campaign for Action is a joint initiative of AARP as well as Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which is further functioning to implement the IOM’s evidence based recommendations concerning future of nursing (Shalala et al., 2011).
