The Safe Patient Handling Act was passed in the state of New York in April 2014. This act incorporates hospi
tals, nursing homes and diagnostic centres under the Article 28 of the State Public Health Law of New York and is responsible to acknowledge and regulate the authorization of public healthcare facilities to the citizens to establish a secure patient handling committee that is responsible for various activities such as nursing, purchasing of necessary hospital and staff equipments as well as risk management in case of emergencies. It is important that the committee has two co-chairpersons; one from management and one from the frontline workers. The act assimilates certain policies for safe handling of patients and the establishment of proper guidelines to provide appropriate training to the healthcare professionals and careful handling of equipment designed to safely lift and move the patient. By adhering to this act, hospitals and other public health facilities of the state were required to establish Safe Patient Handling (SPH) Committees by January 1, 2016 and these committees were in turn required to establish SPH Programs that were facility-specific by January 1, 2017. The act further promotes the Financial Services department of the state to make policies to set up supplies necessary for health care facilities to achieve a reduced workers’ compensation price for such programs.
