Week 2 Discussion Board Instructions Identifying Variables and Measurements Discussion Board In order to have any idea of what we are doing in science, math, or policy, we must know exactly what is being examined.  Objective discussion and science depend on accurate identification of variables and an accurate understanding of their scales of measurement.  This will be a detailed discussion worth 10 points so plan accordingly.  Image by Dorota Wrońska from Pixabay In this discussion, please: 1. Write a research question about a difference between groups, or a relationship between variables that interests you. 1. Then, name/identify the first variable, 1. explain it conceptually (what are you trying to measure?), 2. explain its operational definition (what are the exact steps and equipment or materials required to make the measurement?) 3. list its scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio scale) and explain why the variable fits one of these categories. 4. explain if the variable is discrete (like the number of people), or if its values are continuous (like height) 2. Name/identify the second variable and repeat the steps above 1. Steps 1-4 above 2. Avoid any question that has more than 2 variables - keep things as simple as possible throughout our class. 3. What was difficult, confusing, or interesting about this process of identifying and defining variables? 1. Help your classmates identify, define, and classify variables because most people do not do this correctly at first. 2. To build your skill at reading research, identifying variables, and linking these to real life:  1. What are your reactions to the worldview misperceptions mentioned in our week’s featured video? https://www.ted.com/talks/alan_smith_why_we_re_so_bad_at_statistics 2. What is one variable you have seen being discussed in the news, or in your daily life this week?  3. Why is it important or interesting to you? 4. What is its scale of measurement? ** Please respond to at least 2 classmates by the 6th day of the week, and the sooner the better.  The main post should be at least 500 words.  Both replies to classmates need to be 250 words or more, and should have at least 1 reference.  Remember that we are using discussions and SPSS instead of hand calculations and extensive testing so we expect very strong participation in the discussions and extensive main posts and replies.  Give people a chance to see your replies.  Help each other answer questions.  Post questions for me, etc.  Stats is a team sport so make friends, have interesting conversations about relevant topics, and search the discussion forums to find the people you might want to study with.** Additional Resources 1. Assignment: Identifying Variables and Measurements Discussion Board
1) The research is about the relationship betwee
n the price of the gas and units of car sold.
1. Here, the first variable (dependent variable) is the number of cards sold.
In the above relationship, there exists a complementary relation between the two variables. If the price of the gas increases, it is expected that the units of car sold will be less and vice versa.
2. The number of cards sold is dependent on many factors. However, out of them, price of gas also plays a vital role.
3. Units/Sales follow the Ratio scale of measurement. In ratio scale, the zero point is fixed, ratios of scale values are comparable.
4. The variable ‘units of car sold’ is a discrete variable. Units have clear space between values. It is countable and contains discrete values.
2)
1. Here, the second variable (independent variable) is the price of gas.
To determine, how are the car sales dependent on price of gas.
2. The price of the gas is important in determining the units sold.
3. Price of gas follow the Ratio scale of measurement. In ratio scale, the zero point is immobile, ratios of...
