7 Assessment Criteria Assessment 1: Individual Assignment Weightage 50% Submission Deadline Refer to Timetable Word Limit 1500 – 2000 words A server is a device with a particular set of programs or protocols that provide various services. Together, a server and its clients form a client/server network, which provides routing systems and centralized access to information, resources, stored data, etc. At the most ground level, one can consider it as a technology solution that serves files, data, print, fax resources and multiple computers. For example, a file server is a machine that maintains files and allows clients or users to upload and download files from it. Similarly, a web server hosts websites and allows users to access these websites. Clients mainly include computers, printers, faxes or other devices that can be connected to the server. By using a server, one can securely share files and resources like fax machines and printers. Hence, with a server network, employees can access the Internet or company e-mail simultaneously. There are many different types and aspects of servers including: 1. Application Server 2. Proxy Server 3. Mail Server 4. Virtual Server 5. Blade Server 6. File Server 7. Database Server 8. Print Server 9. Web Server 10. Windows Server 11. Linux Server 12. etc: ____________________ Select any one of the above topic and write a report of 1500 words. Things to include in the report 1. Introduction
A file silver can be defined as a central server present in a network on the computer which provides the file system or few parts of the system to the client switch are connected with network. The file server allows the users to have a centralised storage for the files on the data media and it will be
accessible by all the authorised clients. The strict rules are defined by the administrator of server which provides the access rights to the users. Allows the admin to enable the files which can be checked or opened by authorised user and he can also decide the addition, updating, deletion of the data by the users (Belsan, J. S., Laughlin, J. S., Pedersen, M. H., Raicer, R. J., Rudeseal, G. A., Schafer, C. P., ... & Tomsula, P. J).
When the file servers are connected via the internet and configuration is done properly then, the user can access the files through the local network and also provides the remote access. This allow the user to access the file and save them on the file server. The modern operating systems like the windows, macOS or Linux can be used on the file server but the devices which are present in the network must be compatible with them. The file servers have more features other than just allowing the management and storage of file. The file servers are used as the repository where we can store the programs which are accessible by multiple network participants. It can also be used as the backup server (Midgely, C. W., Holland, C., & Holberger, K. D).
Working of File Server
We should have right hardware to have a reliable file server. The appropriate hardware involves the hard drive and it requires sufficient space to store the files and required programs and also the operating system and the software which can be used by the clients. The file server must have sufficient memory and processing power which can process the files and programs. They must be accessible by the users quickly and without any fault. The requirements of hardware which can be fulfilled by the computer or the requirement of setting up a special server is dependent on the users who are using it. There are special network protocols which are used for the communication to be done between the client and file servers. The SMB (server message blog) developed by the IBM can be used in the local networks on the Windows and macOS operating system. The computers which have Unix operating system like the Linux distribution works mainly with the NFS (network file system). We can combine the both protocol types into a single network command client and file servers on the basis of Unix but it must be a cubed according to the requirements with the software which implements the server message block protocol in the system . Samba is an example of this type.
When we try to access the server using the Internet it works with the FTP or it will have an encrypted variant known as the secure file transfer protocol. The encrypted secure copy and HTTP-based WebDAV can be used as the protocol. The basic function performed by a file server is to provide storage. A home user can have a common location to enhance the overall...
