AMERICA'S OPEN-DOOR POLICY WITH CHINA
In between the year 1899 and 1900 under the administration of President Mc Kinley, the United States took the ‘Open Door’ decision concerning the trade relationship between the other countries and China. Secretary
John Hay articulated the ‘Open Door’ policies that promoted equal opportunity of international trade in China (Bailey 2019). The policy suggested that any country possessing an imperial interest in China will be accepted and provided with free trade policy in China. The open-door policy was a well-thought decision that was taken by the United States so that trade opportunities can be built in between the countries China and US (Brazinsky 2019). This also highlighted that the American had long possessed a business interest in Eastern countries.
The Open-Door policy allowed the United States to expand its markets, especially for industrialised goods (Bush 2017). During this time, there were other powerful nations that maintained their trades in China which included Great Britain, Russia, Germany, Japan and France. However, the United States, in return, did not possess the military might which was promised to fulfil the commitments that were made to China. As a result, Open Door policies resulted in tensions between the different imperial powers (DuBois 2017). This was also the beginning of World War II. During the period of 1900, although the United States grew in its manufacturing capacity for iron and steel and were also growing in the oil market. With the acquisition of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Cuba, the United States were building new markets in the Far East.
Markets were created in machinery, packed meats, steel and industrial marvels. Nevertheless, the trade-in between China and the United States were never straight forward. With the Opium War China lost control on most of the ports that were lucrative for business (Hur 2018). Further, in the year 1899, countries like France, Germany, Japan and Russia have already carved out their own region of influence in China controlling their economies and politics. The launch of the Open-Door Policies resulted in the threatening of the Boxer Rebellion that existed throughout China. The ‘Boxers’ were the anti-foreign and anti-imperial forces that worked within China (Karlsson 2018).
