Professional Orientation (Psychology) Assignment 1: Literature Review Due: 5:00pm Friday 4th September (Week 5) Weight: 20% Word limit: 700 words (+/- 10%) Description: Understanding the factors that influence student success at university is important for students, teachers and administrators. “Success” itself has been viewed from a number of perspectives, including academic success, student health and well-being, retention rates, and personal development. In this assignment, you are required to review the literature on the factors that predict student success at university. You are free to select your own definition of “success” (perhaps select one from the list above). The literature review should be limited to 700 words (counted from the start of the introduction to the end of the conclusion) and be presented according to the conventions provided by the American Psychological Association (7th edition). Referencing, including in- text citations and a reference list, should also adhere to the requirements prescribed by the American Psychological Association (7th edition). An abstract is not required for this assessment. Purpose: This assessment task addresses learning outcomes 1 and 4 (see below). This task will give you an opportunity to practice the research, writing and referencing skills developed in weeks 3, 4 and 5. By reviewing the factors that predict university success, it is hoped that this task will also provide you with an evidence-based approach to support you as a university student. Related learning outcomes: 1. Identify the personal skills, capabilities and knowledge necessary to meet the work standards expected by psychology graduates in the workplace, and develop a personal and academic plan to achieve these. 4. Apply American Psychological Association referencing conventions. Submission: Submit your literature review as a Word document to the appropriate dropbox on Canvas. See the unit outline for information on late submission and extension requests. Marking Criteria: Your literature review will be assessed against the following criteria. Introduction
     The main object
ive of a psychologist after coming into the profession lies in providing the best care to the patients by uplifting their mental strength by the means of therapeutic relationship and through active communication skills and positive gestures, which help them feel more positive towards life. In order to work upon it, effectively and to remove the awkwardness of the patients, for discussing their personal feelings, the psychologist, sometimes, needs to draw upon their own feelings, experiences or personality. This is done to enhance the counselling process so that the patient can get motivation from the same.
Literature Review
As opined by Brijnath, Gahan, Gaffy and Dow (2020), there is a necessity for the psychologists to build an effective rapport with their patients, acting as their friend during the therapeutic sessions while remaining utmost professional in such cases. As supported by Burgener (2020), an effective therapeutic interpersonal communication executed by the skilful psychologists can easily identify the elements of distress and unsatisfactory state of mind of the patients and analyse the root cause in their patients.
Hence, the psychologist’s utmost concern should be to prevent any upcoming harm upon anyone while maintaining the confidentiality of the talk. As supported by Vrij et al. (2020), the psychologist always needs to be a very active listener of the patient, even if they would keep repeating same things more often out of anxiety or any other reason. One should never show signs of irritation show signs of care towards the patience and at any cost never lose patience or be judgemental.
