Introduction
In this case study, the discussion is on a male patient in his mid-fifties suffering from chronic COPD, and requires hospitalisation. The patient is diagnosed by conducting X-Ray, which shows emphysema, one of the main causes for COPD. X-Ray can rule out other lung problems or heart failure. For the proper detection of emphysema, CT scan for lungs is conducted, which will later help in performing surgery for COPD. As a nurse, the nursing assessments required to be performed are: assessing the patients exposed to the risk factors, assessing the patients past and present medical history, assessing the signs and symptoms of COPD and the severity, assessing the patient’s knowledge regarding the disease, assessing the vital stats of the patients and monitoring the sound of the breath and pattern (Cox et al., 2017).
Pathophysiology
COPD is basically known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a kind of lung disorder, which cause blockage in the airways, and the general manifestation is chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The symptoms of COPD are difficulties in breathing, difficulty in breathing while doing certain activities, unable to do basic activities, regular coughing, chest pain, coughing up of mucus and many more (Leung et al., 2020). COPD is most commonly caused by smoking, which counts for 8 out of 10 COPD related deaths according to Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. COPD can also be caused by other secondary processes, such as passive smoking, air pollution, chemicals and dust (Vela et al., 2018).
History
The patient is suffering from mild heart blockage in the left ventricles, which is treated through regular medication. The patient is also suffering from high blood pressure for last two years for which he is administered two medicines in a day. Apart from this general medication process the patient have never undergone any surgery or admitted previously with any complications related to COPD or the diseases he is already suffering from. This is the detailed history of the patient admitted in the hospital with COPD complications.
Nursing Physical Assessment
The vital stats of patient are monitored during the time of admission in the hospital. The blood pressure level was elevated during...
