Sociologist Marshall Ganz draws on his own experience as a labor organizer in his work in labor studies. In the 1960s, Ganz dropped out of college to work with the United Farm Workers, best known for its charismatic leader César Chávez. Ganz eventually became the union’s head of organizing, helping direct one of the most famous labor struggles in U.S. history.
