SOY00411 Assessment 2 (2000words) In this assignment you will use a photo essay to describe and explain Leiper's (2004) basic whole tourism system theory as described in the text book. You will develop captions for photos or images that practically illustrate the whole tourism system for an example of your choice. To do this you must use eight photographs or images that you have taken yourself or found online representing the elements, or components within the elements, and some of the interrelated environments that apply to a specific whole tourism system example of interest to you and with the guidance of your tutor. Your whole tourism system example must include representation of all 5 elements and some interrelated environments, and then for each of the eight photographs or images write an extended caption (100 to 150 words) that relates the subject of the photograph or image to the whole tourism system theory. You will need to draw upon your textbook and other academic publications (e.g. scholarly books and academic journal articles) to help you explain each of the photographs or images in relation to the relevant system element or environment, and where appropriate discuss other relevant theories and models that help explain the tourism function depicted by your photograph or image. For example, if you have a photograph/image of tourists you can explain the role of 'the tourist' element in Leiper's (2004) basic whole tourism system theory, AND also you may refer to tourist motivation or typology theories to help explain why tourists visit that particular destination or what type of tourists are attracted to it. Likewise, destination attraction theory could be discussed in relation to a destination image, or push-pull theories in relation to an image related to the tourist generating or destination region, or perhaps include a destination life cycle theory to help explain the tourism development stage of your destination. Some of the component parts of the elements will be easy to source or photograph, such as an attraction or a type of accommodation at a destination. Other components, for instance the system environments that impact or are impacted by tourism in your example (which could include the geopolitical, economic, sociocultural, ecological, etc) may not be so readily apparent and may be more challenging and require more critical consideration and creativity to depict in a photograph or image. Perhaps the image of a sign at the destination, or a marketing image or depiction of a representative tourism organsiation may be useful in these cases, or a website image regarding a related government agency? IMPORTANT NOTE You will need to have a very good understanding of Leiper's (2004) basic whole tourism system theory and model, what it consists of and how the system elements and environments connect and interact with each other in both temporal and spatial contexts, and also a good understanding of other relevant tourism theories related to the function of system elements. You will need to read and use your text book extensively for this assignment. It's suggested that you consider lots of photographs or images and then select the eight that you feel can best support your photo essay and the theories you wish to explain or include. Thus you must be very familiar with your whole tourism system example - be able to describe all the component parts to someone else. Use the resources already available within the "Assessment Tasks and Submission" folder about how to prepare and write your assignment. Allow many hours to research your system, and many more to prepare and write it...this assessment is worth 50% of your total marks, and thus it is not a simple or quick task, rather it requires the demonstration of critical thinking and application skills. The structure of the photo-essay will be: Introduction: 200–300 words: Describe Leiper's (2004) basic whole tourism system theory including its component elements and environmental interaction, and explain the spatial and temporal relationships that connect them, using relevant literature to support your discussion (all referenced according to Harvard style). Introduce your specific whole tourism system example, stating how this essay facilitates a better understanding of Leiper's (2004) whole tourism system theory in practice (this is your essay statement), and identify the associated theories that will be discussed in relation to the specific function of some of the elemental components depicted. Eight images and captions: For each of the eight photographs/images write an extended caption between 100 and 150 words that explains how the subject of the photograph/image is relevant to a specific component of the whole tourism system model, including any associated theory. Total of ~1000 words. Use relevant literature to help develop each of your captions. Reference all photographs/images and included literature, text book information etc as per Harvard Referencing style. Reflective Conclusion: 200–300 words. Address your essay statement, supporting how you feel the presentation and discussion of photographs or images and associated theories helped facilitate a better understanding of Leiper's (2004) basic whole tourism system theory in practice. Perhaps you can identify specific images, discussions, captions or associated theories that were particularly helpful in understanding the theory or possibly its less obvious components or relationships. This is a reflective conclusion, so may be written in first person language. It should address the research process you have used and what you have learned about the whole tourism system through this assignment, how tourism may impact its environments and how they impact tourism practice. And the importance of understanding, and the outcome of better understanding tourism models and theories for tourism management. Coach Interchange, Byron Bay: 2019Comment by Kevin Markwell: Each image should be adequately captioned and include the date photographed. More detail could be included in the caption Example of a basic level caption that meets requirements to pass This photo shows the ‘end point’ of the Transit Route Region (TRR) linking Tourist Generating Regions to Byron Bay. The TRR covers the movement of tourists between where they live (termed the Tourist Generating Region in the Whole Tourism System) and where they are travelling to (the Tourist Destination Region) (Weaver & Lawton 2014). Buses are the main transport mode that uses this terminus and they use highways and motorways which forms the TTR. There are other TTRs that link Byron Bay to TGRs. Some tourists might be going to other destinations like Nimbin and will need to take a car or local bus service.Comment by Kevin Markwell: Showing that you know the function of the TRR within the WTSComment by Kevin Markwell: Use of a reference to provide the source of the information you are using. Do not limit yourself to the textbook, however, like this caption doesComment by Kevin Markwell: Better term would be ‘commercial coaches’Comment by Kevin Markwell: This is true but it would have been good to give some other examples Byron Bay Coach Interchange: Johnson Street, Byron Bay: 14 January 2019Comment by Kevin Markwell: A comprehensive caption that includes detail about exact location and also exact date of photography Example of an excellent caption This image represents an ‘end point’ of the TRR linking TGRs (eg Sydney and Brisbane) to Byron Bay. The TRR is one of the spatial dimensions of the WTS that encompasses the movement of tourists between where they live (TGR) and where they are travelling to (TDR) (Weaver & Lawton 2014). Important factors that tourists consider when selecting a TTR (and mode of transport) include efficiency (in time and cost) and safety and security (Leiper 2004; Weaver & Lawton 2014). Other transport modes using TRR to Byron Bay are aircraft (through Ballina airport) and private motor vehicle. TTR’s create significant carbon emissions that impact climate change (Scott, Hall & Gossling 2012).Comment by Kevin Markwell: In your Introduction to the Photo-Essay you would have already used the full terms Tourist Generating Region and Tourist Transit Region so it’s OK to use acronyms here – saves on your word countComment by Kevin Markwell: Gives some specific information about TGRs in relation to LismoreComment by Kevin Markwell: Demonstrates an awareness of the spatial dimension of the WTSComment by Kevin Markwell: Use of a reference to provide the source of the information you are using. Do not limit yourself to the textbook, however. Comment by Kevin Markwell: Another example of demonstrating more understanding of the TRRComment by Kevin Markwell: An additional reference which is an academic journal article – demonstrates that you have searched for additional support in the academic literature AND you are demonstrating that you have an understanding of the relationship between TTRs and climate change The second example depicts an excellent caption because it provides insightful and highly relevant descriptions and observations in relation to the Whole Tourism System model, drawing from a number of sources of relevant academic literature to support the discussion. The first example is adequate, a caption is present, however, while there is some detail about the image and connection to a model, this is limited and further academic literature should have been used to support discussion. SOY00411 Tourism Theories and Practices Photo Essay Avriningtyas Wahyu Wulandari The Hotel School Sydney 23510647 Tourism has a lot of meaning and known for its complexity. According to Leiper (2004), a system is a group of interrelated, interdependent and interacting elements that together form a single functional structure. Leiper's basic whole tourism system or known as WTS helps to analyse and get a better understanding of what tourism is (Leiper 2004). WTS covers five core elements and each element has to have at least one and those elements are tourist, tourist-generating region, transit route region, tourist destination and tourism industries. Climate, economic, cultural, natural, financial crisis and other external factors also can affect the WTS and vice versa. There are several tourist criteria (spatial, temporal, and purposive) linked to the WTS system. The connection between those criteria and the WTS system is crucial and every tourist must meet those certain criteria simultaneously before taking any further action about management issues in the WTS system. Domestic & international tourism, outbound & inbound tourist and, short-haul & long-haul travel is included in the spatial component. And to be classified as a tourist in the spatial component, an individual must leave their comfort zone. Whereas, to be classified as a tourist in the temporal component, the length of time involved in the trip determine are the individual is a tourist and what type of tourist are they. Thus, there are four types of the major tourist and they are international stayover, domestic stayover, international excursionist, and domestic excursionist. Whereupon, in the travel purpose (purposive component), defines that not all travel is tourism. Three major categories qualified a tourist in this component and those three categories are leisure, business, and visiting friends & relatives (Weaver & Lawton 2014).
