Scenario
The Australian Government has hired you to help analyse some mental and physiological health data. Most data were collected in March (Time 1), with other data collected in July (Time 2). The Government has also asked you to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mental Health Program on mental health outcomes. Half the sample were allocated to the active treatment group, and the other half allocated to the control group.

Research Questions

Answers for the following questions must be formatted in APA 7th format. Insert answers immediately into the space below the question:
    1
The Government would like to know if mean depression differs between employment categories. Using the SPSS output provided, report the results of the inferential statistics in APA format including all relevant statistics (4 marks).
With F(2, 297)=47.561, p<5%, there is sufficient evidence to conclude that at least one pair of the employment categories differ significantly for mean depression. With p<5%, there is sufficient evidence to conclude that there is significant difference in the mean depression score between employment categories (1, 2), (1, 3) and (2, 3).
    2
The Government would like to know whether anxiety can be used to predict sleep quality. Using the SPSS output provided, report the results of the inferential statistics in APA format including all relevant statistics (3.5 marks).
With F(1, 298)=48.147, P<5%, there is sufficient evidence to conclude that anxiety can be used to predict sleep quality. The regression equation is sleep quality = 16.309 – 0.402*anxiety. There is 13.9% variation in the sleep quality which is explained by anxiety. Thus fitted model is said to be a bad fit for the data.
    3
The Government would like to know if mean wellbeing at Time 1 differs between genders. Using the SPSS output provided, report the results of the inferential statistics in APA format including all relevant statistics (3.5 marks).
With F(1, 298) = 0.294, p>5%, there is no sufficient evidence to conclude that that mean wellbeing at Time 1 differs between gender.

Answers to the following questions DO NOT need to be in APA format. Insert answers immediately into the space below the question:
    4
The Government intends to launch a phone App that alerts users if they are at risk of developing severe stress. Should the software engineers use depression or anxiety levels to predict stress levels? The engineers want to use continuous measures for greater sensitivity. Use the most appropriate statistics in the SPSS output provided to justify your response (2 marks).
For model which uses depression to predict stress, there is only 36.6% variation in the stress which is explained by depression. For model which uses anxiety to predict stress, there is only 17.5% variation in the stress which is explained by anxiety. Thus, with a higher value of coefficient of determination, I can say that software engineers use depression to predict stress levels.
    5
The software engineers need assistance developing an equation that can predict stress levels using anxiety scores (using the original anxiety scale). Based on the SPSS output provided, provide an equation that can be used for this purpose (1 mark).
Stress level = 6.336 + .437*anxiety
    6
Suppose Nuala scores 16 on the anxiety scale. Using the equation in question 5, what would be their predicted level of stress? (1 mark).
Stress level = 6.336 + .437*16 = 13.328
    7
Stress is known to be normally distributed (use the first Desciptives Statistics table in the SPSS output provided for means and standard deviations for stress). Should we be concerned with Nuala’s predicted level of stress? Use statistics to justify your response (1 mark).
The average level of stress is 11.65 with standard deviation of 4.3. The Nuala’s predicted level of stress is 13 which lies within 1 standard deviation of mean. Thus, there is no worry about Nuala’s predicted level of stress.

Based on your calculations for question 8, what is the F-critical value? (1 mark).
F(0.05, 3, 120) = 2.68
    10
The data analyst suggests performing post-hoc tests following the ANOVA in question 8 to identify mean group differences. What is your recommendation: Should the data analyst perform post-hoc tests? Justify your response using the most appropriate statistics (1 mark).
Since F < F(0.05, 3, 120), I fail to reject the null hypothesis at 5% level of significance and conclude that there is no significant difference in the mean groups. Thus, post hoc test is not required. This is because post hoc test identifies the significant pairs, but there none of the pairs differs significantly.
    11
Does gender or age (those below 50, or 50 and older) have a stronger effect on mean sleep quality? Use the most appropriate statistics in the SPSS output provided to justify your response (2 marks).
Eta square for gender, SS_effect/SS_total = 496.653/6019.080 = 0.082513
Eta square for age, SS_effect/SS_total =739.756/6019.08 = 0.122902
With higher eta square, I can say that age has a stronger effect on sleep as compared to gender.
    12
Base both your answers on visual inspection of the descriptive statistics in the SPSS output provided (do not interpret the inferential statistics). Do unemployed individuals appear to have lower levels of mean anxiety compared to individuals employed part time? Do part-time employed individuals appear to have higher levels of mean anxiety compared to individuals employed full time? For both answers, describe any differences or...
