Simply read for understanding. Qualitative data analysis is an interactive process. Each iteration adds value. Don’t take short-cuts through the process. There are multiple business problems/opportunities that are applicable. identify diverse topics based on your personal experience and understanding of the data. In other words, there are many “right answers” for this task. Also, the question/problem of interest may change as you analyse the data. Part B: Code and Write Memos Reread each interview and identify codes (it may be useful to highlight codes as you read). Prepare a list of the codes you identified. There is not a minimum or maximum number of codes; the amount identified will vary by you. Be mindful, as you continue to re-read the data (and as a result gain a better understanding of it), your codes will evolve. While coding, write memos periodically to capture your thoughts, questions and reactions to the content and the codes. Include the date, time and a title on each memo. There is no magic formula to this process, write a memo when you have an idea based on what you read or when you find yourself reflecting on the content. The memos will allow you to capture your insights as they develop. You should write several memos for each interview: perhaps 2-5 per interview. The number of memos depends on your thought process; there is no ideal number. The goal is to generate meaningful insights. There is no minimum or maximum length for a memo. The goal is for the memo to capture a concept or an idea. Most memos will contain at least 1 paragraph but not be longer than a page. Part C: Generate Insight from your Memos Reread your existing memos, then write new memos based on additional thoughts this activity generated. Highlight any similarities/differences in the views of each executive. What are the themes? Are there any contradictions? Write several memos for this process (perhaps 2 – 4 additional memos, again the number depends on your thought process and insights). Has your research question/business problem of interest changed? If so, update it. Part D: Use Your Insights to Adjust the Codes Adjust your codes based on your insights (keep track of your initial list of codes and your final list of codes as you will be required to submit both of them with the next assessment). If necessary, write an additional memo to summarise new insights (only write additional memos if you have additional insights). NOTE: Be advised, this is an iterative process. You may adjust the codes throughout the analysis (for reporting purposes, be sure to keep a copy of your initial list and your final list of codes). Part E: Prepare a Report to Summarise the Data Analysis Process and Your Findings (Guidelines are provided in the Report Template)
