Singapore Airlines and Employee Lifecycle
Introduction
Singapore Airlines has established itself as the best airlines in all of Singapore and one of the best airlines worldwide. It has upheld the title of world’s best airline since 2018 (See Appendix 1). This has not come about with mere luck. SIA has constantly and continuously worked on building its image through delivering excellent customer service at cost effective prices (Wirtz & Heracleous, 2016). Singapore Airlines takes pride in flying to 62 destinations involving 32 countries spanning five continents.
SIA is known for its talented individuals and for helping its staff grow and develop personally and professionally. This paper provides an overview of how the SIA handles its employees throughout their employee cycle. It also provides some recommendations on improving SIA’s HR standards in order to remain an employer of choice.
Findings
The SIA has a very disciplined policy with regards to recruiting and selecting employees starting from cabin crews to more specialized jobs like piloting and management. This policy is what has enabled SIA to create its near perfect image when it comes to customer satisfaction.
In ensuring that both the employee and the airlines achieve their goals SIA has developed an overall effective policy with regards to employee lifecycle (Smither, 2003). Starting from recruitment and selection down to transition, the company aims at keeping the best interest of all parties in view.
Recruitment & Selection
Recruitment and Selection involves the process through which employees are selected and hired by a company. It includes all the screening, evaluation and choosing done in the hiring process.
The recruitment and hiring process in SIA follows a typical four element step.
Step 1- Online application- Employees are invited to look for vacant position and then fill out an online form and submit their resumes.
Step 2- Interviews- Once selected, employees are invited for preliminary interviews which would involve tests like essay, précis and psychometric assessment.
Step 3- Pre-employment screening- The employees are required to undergo certain check-ups before hire like a medical check-up etc.
Step 4- Hire- if the candidate passes all the tests the recruitment team contacts the employee with a job offer and responds to questions that they may have.
This four phase selection process involves strict assessment of employees and only those aptly qualified are selected for the jobs.
