Students will answer four short essay questions on general design, methodology, and where applicable, ethical and cultural issues.

For this assignment, you are required to answer four short essay questions on general design and methodological issues. Under no circumstances should any single answer be more than 500 words long (approximately one standard A4 page), and you must provide a word count at the end of each answer. Some questions may require a longer answer than others, and don’t feel as though you have to write 500 words for each answer—that is theabsolute maximum. Please answer the questions in full text form rather than by using bullet points and other summarising methods. All reference material must be cited and referenced in correct APA style. Feel free to cite websites, but if you do so, reference and cite them correctly.

The FOUR essay questions are:

1.“The scientific method provides the best way to answer questions

that are of interest to
psychological science
.” Do you agree with this statement? Take a position on

this question. In
answering this question, make sure to contrast the scientific approach with one of the non
-
scientific methods of knowledge acquisition that were discussed in lectures, perhaps in the
context of a hypothetical research question.

2. “What is the best design for an intervention study, and why?” Describe a hypothetical intervention study and outline how you would design such a study. Make sure that you describe all the essential features of the design that you choose.

3. “Why are reliability and validity such important principles in psychological measurement?” Make sure you clearly define both terms in your answer. In answering this question, consider a scenario where an important decision is made about a person on the basis of a psychological test. Why would reliability and validity be important in this situation, and what might be the consequence of using a test with poor psychometric properties?

4. Describe some of the main ethical issues in conducting research with Australian Indigenous populations and how such research can be conducted ethically and in a culturally responsive way.

1.“The scientific method provides the best way to answer questions that are of interest to psychological science.” Do you agree with this statement? Take a position on this question. Sol: Yes, I do agree with the statement that the scientific method provides the best way to answer questions that are of interest to psychological science. Well, there are many methods that are applicable in psychological science, but scientific methods are more accurate and precise. There are few of the steps & techniques that are being followed in the scientific method of psychological science are given below:
· Empirical Observation Method: It won’t be wrong to say that empirical observation is one of the techniques that has been followed in psychological science. It basically relies on the observation of world records. This method doesn’t take any emotional feeling to come in-between. It only bothers on the number of world records and that’s why it is the best way to get the right results in psychological science.
· Unbiased Approach Method: Scientific method doesn’t take into consideration any type of biasness. It is a pure unbiased approach method to psychological science. It helps to take a decision without being biased towards anyone and provides the right direction of support.
· Replicability in Experiments: It supports reducing the risk of providing the same situations but expecting to get different results; instead, if a person is providing the same thing, he/she is going to get the same results due to the scientific approach.
· Provisional Outcomes: The best part of having a scientific approach to psychological science is that the results are provisional. They are definitely open to all the debates & questions. If anyone has doubt about the same, they can easily raise their queries.
· Systematic Observation: In the scientific method, they follow a pattern in a very systematic manner. It basically involves planning rather than sudden or unplanned things.
These are the few advantages of the scientific method in psychological science as well. There are a lot of benefits that psychological science includes while approaching the scientific method but when it comes to the non-scientific approach, it has few benefits as well contrasting to the scientific method. Following are a few benefits the non-scientific method provides comparatively scientific method given below:
· Rely on Traditions: Non-scientific method approaches the old traditions. Old traditions help psychological science to understand the situation more because there are few traditions that are being followed for so long and provide accurate and precise results which are hard to find in the scientific method. Henceforth, in this way, non-scientific methods are somewhere reliable as well.
· The basis of Personal Experiences: There are few decisions in the non-scientific method that are taken on the basis of personal experience. Personal experiences always help a person to take psychological decisions more precisely and the intuitions of a person come from the heart, which is somewhere right as well, but it is not found in the scientific method.
Scientific methods for Psychological sciences are perfect because it has so many benefits attached to them but there are few things non-scientific methods offer. Every method is somewhere complete in its own way, it totally depends on the one to choose accordingly.
2. “What is the best design for an intervention study, and why?” Describe a hypothetical intervention study and outline how you would design such a study. Make sure that you describe all the essential features of the design...
